Organizational Background

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) is a civil society coalition bringing together grassroots women’s rights organizations from Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, and Uganda. Established in 1995, SIHA aims to strengthen the capacity of women’s rights organizations in the Horn of Africa, contributing to the empowerment of women and advocating for effective change.

SIHA operates as a regional platform for mobilizing activists, vulnerable groups, and marginalized women, men, and girls to challenge the root causes of problems faced by women and girls in the Horn of Africa Region. More information about SIHA is available at www.sihanet.org

Background of the Consultancy

SIHA, Under Feminist peace for Sudan project is implementing a four day training aimed at amplifying the voices of Sudanese women peace activists and women human rights defenders (WHRDs). AS they are now facing unique challenges due to active conflict, displacement, and ongoing human rights violations. This training workshop intends to address one of those challenges – the limited visibility of women's voices and perspectives in international advocacy spaces.

SIHA seeks a highly qualified expert on International Advocacy to deliver and facilitate a four-day intensive training workshop on international advocacy, designed to empower 30 women peace activists and WHRDs with the knowledge, tools, and skills to successfully engage with institutions like the African Union (AU), European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), and other relevant bodies.

Objectives of the Consultancy

  • Enhance participants' understanding of the role of international and regional institutions and their mandates.

  • Develop skills for preparing action-oriented advocacy agendas tailored to different international and regional advocacy events (meetings, conferences, forums).

  • Equip participants with effective communication techniques for self-presentation and representing themselves and/or their organizations.

  • Train participants on crafting various advocacy tools such as statements, petitions, gender alerts, and calls to action.

  • Guide participants in developing individual advocacy plans for specific peacebuilding issues.

  • Identify entry points for engaging with relevant international and regional institutions.

    Methodology

    The training will follow a participant-centered methodology that promotes active learning and knowledge sharing. This
    includes:

  • Interactive lectures and discussions: Experts will provide clear explanations but encourage questions and dialogue.

  • Group work and case studies: Participants will learn best practices through collaborative activities and real-world examples.

  • Simulation exercises and role-playing: Participants will gain practical experience through simulated advocacy engagements.

    Deliverables

    Activity :

  • Prepare training Materials and Session Plans with clear objectives learning

  • Conduct and deliver the training

  • Design training evaluation tools and materials

    Deliverable :

  • Training agenda, PowerPoint presentation, Handouts and resource materials for participants .

  • Workshop Report detailing key content covered participant engagement, and key takeaways.

  • Pre and post training assessments.

    Due Date :

  • Approximately one weeks before the workshop

  • Within one week of workshop completion

  • Throughout the workshop

    Budget

    The budget range is from $1,500 to $2,000 USD, depending on the consultant's experience level and whether travel expenses are involved. This range accounts for variations in expertise and potential travel costs. The budget will cover consultant expenses, training materials preparations, report writing, and any other relevant costs incurred during the training period.

    Key Competences and Qualifications

  • Demonstrate In-depth knowledge of international human rights mechanisms, advocacy frameworks, and institutions, along with experience advocating within the UN, AU, and/or IGAD systems.

  • Proven ability to design and deliver engaging, participatory, and results-oriented training for activists.

  • Experience in empowering and mentoring individuals or groups for effective advocacy.

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of women activists from Sudan with sensitivity and an understanding of the challenges they face.

  • Strong written and oral communication in English is essential. Proficiency in Arabic is an advantage.
