St Andrew’s School, Turi is highly respected in Kenya and regarded as one of the leading international schools in East Africa.

Numbering 620 pupils, it comprises two semi-autonomous schools: a Preparatory School of circa 250 pupils between the ages of 3 and 13 and a Senior School of circa 370 pupils between the ages of 13 and 18.

It is fully coeducational and the great majority are boarders. The School has an overtly Christian foundation and sees its overall aim as encouraging young men and women to ‘live and lead with integrity’.

St Andrew’s School, Turi is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff to share this commitment.

Role

  • St Andrew’s, Turi comprises two semi-autonomous Schools: the Preparatory School for
    pupils between the ages of 3 and 13, and the Senior School for pupils between the ages of 13
    and 18.
  • The Head of Learning Success (HLS) is responsible to the Deputy Head (Academic) for the
    specific fulfilment of required duties listed below.
  • S/he will support the School to fulfil its
    mission to develop successful individuals who live and lead with integrity through a wellrounded and outstanding education within a Christian community.
  • S/he is also responsible for overseeing the provision, both within and beyond the classroom for the academically Highly Able (approx. top 10% of UK ability) and Extremely Able (approx. top 2%) (H&EA)
    students in the Senior School
  • The HLS is a member of the Academic Management Team (AMT).

    Responsibilities

    The overarching responsibilities of the HLS include:

  • Supporting the Christian Ethos of the School
  • Leading Learning Success in the Senior School
  • Managing of Exam access arrangements
  • Maintaining and updating Individual Support Plans ( ISP’s)
  • Monitoring teaching and learning to ensure appropriate differentiation for less-able (SEN) and more-able students (H&EA), those with specific learning difficulties (SpLD), and students who have English as a second language
    (EAL)
  • Overseeing the identification and maintaining of an accurate register of SEN, SpLD, H&EA and EAL students, including maintaining an up to date
    Exams Access Arrangements register
  • Co-ordinating intervention across all subject areas of the School as well as within the Boarding Houses
  • Teaching support lessons as required
  • Oversee the development of the library

    Duties

    The principal duties of the Head of Learning Success are to:

  • Support the School’s Christian ethos in both principle and practice

    Leading Learning Success in the Senior School

  • Deliver Learning Success inset

    Raise the profile of Learning Success in the School, which includes:

  • To capture all Learning Success areas in one central point, which is easy for anyone to see To centralise information about all students known to LSC, in order to inform all staff about the
    needs of these students and adapt their teaching accordingly
  • Monitor the programmes offered to all students known to the LSC, amongst other things, all scholars in the School
  • Oversee character education in the School by working closely with the Leader/Head of Character Education
  • Students of all abilities to report to the School on the benefits the department (at assembly, student council, Governors meetings,
    etc.) Students who are linked to the LSC should report to the School on the benefits of the department, though assemblies, student council, Governors meetings etc
  • Run an enrichment programme (‘ Enrich’), an extra-curricular group designed to provide cross curricular activities, high level discussion, and
    the chance to socialize with other ‘Highly able’ students and scholars (and others who show
    an interest in the programme) across year groups
    who may have similar interests
  • Support the academic scholarship selection process for both Year 9 and Year 12 entry
  • Work with the Head of College and Deputy Head Academic to devise preparation programmes designed to support students applying for elite
    universities

    Managing of Exam access arrangements

  • Assessing students who may require Exam access arrangements
  • Overseeing the implementation of exam access arrangements in internal and external exams
  • Maintaining a current Level 7 Assessment

    Qualification for the assessment of Exam access arrangements ( preferably CPT3A)

  • Collecting evidence for extra time applications, readers, and scribes and any
    other access arrangements required
  • Co-ordinating support for students who use a word-processor and maintaining a list of those who need to use a word processor as their normal
    way of working
  • Keeping up-to-date with JCQ regulations
  • Completing and submitting Form 8s with Edexcel and CIE exam boards
  • Liaising with students, parents, and teachers about student requirements Maintaining and updating Individual Support Plans (ISP’s)
  • Create an ISP for students who have been identified as SEN, SpLD, H&EA or EAL
  • Communicate all ISPs to staff
  • Liaise with staff, students and parents in the creation and maintenance of ISPs
  • Monitoring teaching and learning to ensure appropriate differentiation for lessable, more-able, students with specific learning difficulties, and students who have English as a second language
  • Lead CPD on differentiation strategies
  • Monitor implementation of differentiation strategies in the classroom
  • Ensure inclusion is monitored at whole-school level by senior management
  • Overseeing the identification of and maintaining an accurate register of SEN,
    SpLD, H&EA and EAL students
  • Maintain up to date register of SEN, SpLD, H&EA and EAL students in the Senior School following current UK best practice for identification
  • Disseminate information to teachers in a form that can be easily used in day to day planning- Provision Maps on iSAMS
  • Communicate with the HLS in the Prep School and other feeder schools to ensure that previously identified students are quickly assimilated into the Senior School programme
  • Provide an annual update on best practice from around the world
  • Maintain an up to date Exam Access Arrangements register
  • Advise the Head during the admission process if the student is academically
    less able Co-ordinating intervention across all subject areas, including Boarding Houses
  • Liaise with Maths, English, and Science in particular to ensure there is appropriate support for SEN, SpLD, H&EA and EAL students
  • Co-ordinate mentors for H&EA students
  • Monitor intervention and ensure there is minimal disruption to the school day
  • Ensure students are receiving the necessary amount of support throughout the year

    Teaching support lessons

  • Provide additional support according to individual needs
  • Co-ordinate specialist teachers in core subjects to deliver additional support
  • Lead the Learning Success non-exam Year 10/11 subject options

    Oversee the development of the library

  • Line manage the librarian
  • Oversee the library development to ensure regular use by a large number of students
  • Oversee the development of student literacy skills
  • Oversee the engendering of a love of reading

    Terms and conditions

  • The Head of Learning Success’ terms and conditions are determined by the Head of
    the Senior School.
