SOS Children’s Villages Kenya (SOS CV KE) is an affiliate of SOS Children’s Villages (SOS CV) – International whose mission is to build families for children in need, help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities.
In Kenya, the organisation runs five Children’s Villages in Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Meru and Kisumu.
SOS Children’s Villages Kenya also runs education and health programmes and works with local communities through Families Strengthening Programs.
We seek to recruit a suitably qualified person for the following position:
Child Safeguarding Coordinator – National Office Nairobi
Key Functions of the Job:
The Coordinator supports implementation and integration of child safeguarding and protection approaches into the SOS Children’s Village Programs, progmammes and operations through the provision of technical guidance to the SOS CV KE Member Association (MA), partner organizations, community child protection committees, community volunteers, visitors, suppliers and other stakeholders.
The Coordinator is in charge of designing, coordinating and monitoring child rights implementation and related partnership activities in the country. In this work area, he /she provides expertise to the National Association and proposes the related strategic goals and actions at the national level.
He/she will ensure full compliance of the MA’s programmes and operations to the organization’s Child Safeguarding policy and existing national laws and policies related to Child Safeguarding and Protection.
S/he will undertake various duties which include but not limited to:
Coordinate the review and implementation of the Child Protection Policy and related child safeguarding policy support documents in SOS CV Kenya and its programme locations.
Coordinate Child Safeguarding (CS) activities in the MA including awareness creation on CS; effective reporting mechanisms for CS cases; appropriate and timely responses to reported cases; and documentation of CS cases and trends for learning and reporting.
Support Programme Directors (PDs), National programme team and other functions in building strong links and cooperation with national government and local authorities on child safeguarding, as well as other stakeholders to enhance programme development.
Build and sustain effective and close working partnerships with relevant government counterparts, national stakeholders, global partners, allies, donors and academia – through active networking, advocacy and effective communication – to build capacity, exchange knowledge and expertise and to reinforce cooperation to achieve sustainable and broad results in child safeguarding.
Regularly develop reports on developments in child protection/safeguarding to the National Director and the responsible regional Programme Director Unit.
Keep abreast of research and trends in child protection approaches.
Work closely with states and Child Protection Networks on
child protection activities including the Violence Against Children, the domestication of Child Rights laws and the establishment/reactivation of child-friendly judiciary systems.
Identify opportunities for learning, formative research, special studies and operational research on child protection, and work with M&E team, Program team, and external support (if needed) to conduct research;
Ensure a good flow of information within the National Association on child rights/child protection issues in the countries and related policy trends (change in the national legislation, new structures in place, main problems, challenges, gaps, etc.) within the child welfare system.
Support National/Locational programme managers in the location in applying for different sources of funds particularly for child protection and child safeguarding projects.
Required Qualifications / Abilities
Degree in social science. Post graduate qualifications will be an added advantage.
Minimum eight (8) years’ relevant professional experience in child safeguarding and protection programming, prefarably in an NGO set up
Thorough understanding of existing national and international laws and policies related to Child Safeguarding and protection.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with agencies, local governments and community leaders and develop multi-stakeholder support for development priorities and advocacy initiatives related to Child Safeguarding and protection.
Proven interpersonal, leadership, communication and advocacy skills.
Must have no criminal record and a demonstrated understanding of children’s issues and rights.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of people from diverse cultural, religious, ethnic and gender affiliations.

Ability to analyze situations and take corrective actions
Excellent quality, attention to detail, & organizational skills
Commitment to process of continuous improvement.
