Who We AreSOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation.
We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974.
Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.
Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care.

As a Child Protection and Community Engagement Officer you will be responsible for coordinating and leading community engagement and mobilization activities for the Child Protection response project in line with International minimum standards and COVID 19 guidelines.

Your role
As a Child Protection and Community Engagement Officer you will be in charge of the following
Strengthening child protection community-based systems
Supporting in planning and implementing Covid-19 related activities while ensuring compliance with Covid-19 guidelines
Ability to speak Oromifa/Somali language
Providing support in the development of alternative care systems in accordance with international policies and national procedures/norms;
Conducting and supervising need based training on social norms change
Supporting the establishment and strengthening of community based mechanisms and groups including adolescent peer groups, child protection committees, children’s clubs, parent groups and informal foster caregivers,
Supporting community advocates and children to develop participatory media and other materials to use in the community to raise awareness;
Conducting training and follow-up on teachers, government, partner staff and other stakeholders in community based protection
Designing and facilitating community mobilization/sensitization campaigns in collaboration with Community Engagement Workers, Community Based Protection Mechanisms, and children/adolescents
Following up on volunteers on locations to ensure
quality implementation of activities;
Providing ongoing support and ensuring child participation and safeguarding practices are strictly adhered to;
Providing support to parent groups and caregivers by organizing and leading sessions with parents on positive parenting practices.
Providing on-the-job training to partner staff, volunteers related to child participation and child protection;
Reporting general protection issues and presenting to Child Protection Officers
Producing weekly and monthly data and regular narrative reports
Ensuring beneficiaries are informed and regularly reminded about their entitlements from the project, and the confidential complaints mechanisms;
Job Requirements

Must have
Relevant university degree in social work, social sciences, development or other relevant field (relevant and significant work experience will also be considered)
Excellent knowledge and skills in child rights, child protection, child/youth/community resilience, psycho social support, community/youth development and mobilization, especially in an emergency context..
Experience
At least 2 to 5 years of working experience in Child Protection in emergency or development programmes
Experience working with at-risk children and families,
Proven capacity to coordinate, and coach staff in Child Protection skills and project management
Experience of, and commitment to, working through systems of community participation
Excellent command of the English language and good communication skills, including both written and verbal. Preferably fluent in the language(s) spoken in the program’s target communities
Holds partners accountable to deliver on their responsibilities - giving them the freedom to deliver in the best way they see fit, providing the necessary development to improve performance and applying appropriate consequences when results are not achieved
