Job Description

SNV, Netherlands Development Organization, is Dutch based, non-for profit foreign charity operating in Ethiopia since the 1970s. Currently SNV is working in the eight+ regional states of Ethiopia which includes– Addis Ababa, Afar, Somali, Gambella, Benishangul, SNNPR, Oromia, Amhara and Tigray regional states, providing technical assistance and program implementation in the major 3 sectors including Agriculture, WASH and Energy.

SNV is an open and learning organization focusses on improving the lives of Ethiopian Need people through best practices in value chain, market and youth and gender. Through its work in the three sectors, SNV in Ethiopia supports the development of number of value chains and commodities to improve the Livelihoods.

This takes a value chain and market development approach, with special focus on improving access to sustainable markets for smallholder farmers, youths, urban development and by developing business-to-business relations and improving business development services.

BRIDGE, Building Rural Income through Inclusive Dairy Business Growth in Ethiopia, is a five-year dairy development project (2018-2023), implemented by SNV Ethiopia in partnership with Wageningen University-Livestock Research.

The impact of the project is to contribute to an “improved performance in the dairy sector in Ethiopia”, for 120,000 farming households, with four main outcomes:

(1) Improved milk production,
(2) Improved milk collection, processing, and marketing,
(3) Improved consumption of nutritious foods, and
(4) Improved enabling environment. The project will work in 4 regional states: Oromia, Amhara, SNNP and Tigray.

SNV Ethiopia is looking for dynamic, experienced, talented, energetic, flexible, open and ready to learn candidates for Senior Nutrition Research Advisor for its growing program and the Building Rural Income through Inclusive Dairy Business Growth in Ethiopia (BRIDGE) project in Addis Ababa, country office of SNV.

The role
The successful appointee will have access to start-up resources and some ongoing support, and will be encouraged to apply for his/her own skills, knowledge and experience.

The Senior Nutrition Research (NR) Advisor (WUR) will lead project’s Research & Innovation (R&I) agendas focussing on consumers’ behaviour and actions and on mainstreaming nutrition sensitivity into the dairy sector in the project geographic areas. The activity will be done in close collaboration with the BRIDGE Senior Nutrition and Gender advisor and the other R&I advisors.

The advisor will lead the development of action research agendas on nutrition sensitivity of the project activities. The NR advisor will advise and support the SNVs’ Senior Nutrition and Gender advisor to identify, design, develop, implement & monitor activities to improve dietary diversity of project households and the wider community and nutrition related activities within the dairy value chains of the project.

The NR advisor will, as part the of the M&E team, participate in the development and implementation of BRIDGE baseline, midline, end line surveys, fields surveys, studies and pilots to ensure relevant nutritional data is collected.

The NR advisor will collaborate and coordinate with the BRIDGE Senior Nutrition and Gender Advisor in the further development of relevant action research activities and align the implementation of these additional activities with the project implementation (only if need arises).The NR advisor will develop the capacity in nutrition (sensitive) data collection of the BRIDGE project team,

MEAL team and other partners involved in conducting action research. The NR advisor will support the BRIDGE project team and their partners with the mainstreaming of nutrition throughout the four components of the BRIDGE project.

The NR advisor in coordination with the BRIDGE Senior Nutrition and Gender advisor and with the MEAL coordinator will develop relevant materials for different target groups to communicate nutrition (sensitive) project results.

Job Requirements

Education

M.Sc. Degree / PhD degree in public health, nutrition and related fields of study.

Experience

At least Minimum work experience of 10 years after MSc

Good knowledge of the Ethiopian nutrition sector and in particular of nutrition sensitive agriculture and /or nutrition sensitive value chains and relevant work experience in nutrition (action) research

Understanding of the dairy sector is preferable

Willingness to travel frequently within Ethiopia and abroad if necessary.
