Sightsavers Head of Communications Jobs in Kenya
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a mixture of treatable and preventable diseases that continue to affect over a billion of the world’s poorest and most marginalized people.
They are a consequence and cause of poverty as they thrive where access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare is limited. Their impact on individuals and communities can be devastating.
Many of them cause severe disfigurement and disability. They impact on life expectancy, education and economic opportunities of affected individuals and the communities they live in.
Principal Accountabilities:
Working with the Director of the Support Centre and with partners:
Build on and execute a communications strategy to tell the story of Uniting to
Combat NTDs
Bring communications planning alive and show how media and technology platforms can be used creatively to achieve organizational goals
Prioritize and lead Uniting to Combat NTDs’ communications activities
Ensure consistent messaging and branding for public relations work, spokespeople and all program materials
Create communications campaigns to target key audiences with compelling calls to action and increase their engagement with NTDs, our organization and our partners
Challenge and inspire teams to think differently about communications channels and platforms
Provide key stakeholders with counsel on communications strategies, messaging, channels and content
Collaborate with team members and partners in preparing briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in key events
Coordinate and partner with global communication counterparts on an ongoing basis
Build and facilitate strategic contacts with media houses and partnerships to ensure effective public advocacy and communications
Promote public and partner engagement during key campaigns and events
Consistently identify and execute opportunities to insert Uniting to Combat
NTDs’ views and/or information about NTDs in relevant news cycles
Monitor, analyze and report on resulting coverage
Perform targeting exercises and develop deep human insights to inform ways
in which we can connect with audiences
The principal accountabilities are not meant to be an exhaustive list of tasks. The need
for flexibility is required and the job holder is expected to carry out any other related
duties that are within the employee's skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
Jobholder Entry Requirements - the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours required
University degree in relevant field or equivalent work experience
Minimum 5-7 years strategic communications experience with excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
Experience managing and executing across several communications media
A strategic and results-oriented focus with the ability to effectively lead a project team
as well as work as part of a management team
Substantial hands-on communications/marketing or journalism experience
Experience/knowledge in development communications with a health/science
background either at university level or working for other NGOs
A passion for communicating complex, often very technical and jargon-riddled medical stories/developments in an approachable and engaging way, making full and creative use of available assets
Ability to keep up with the latest developments in 10 key neglected tropical
diseases and liaise with all the relevant partners/stakeholders
Understanding of the relationship between NGO, government and private sector to spot new developments, target new audiences and drive further engagement
Experience of working in developing countries desirable but not essential
Understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity for disabled people
English fluency/proficiency is essential; French language would be desirable

Passionate about marketing, digital communication and emerging digital trends, plus strong understanding of best practices
Proven ability to write, create and implement communications plans and deliverables, for the overall partnership
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, multitask, prioritise deadlines, work
independently and take initiative
Strong organizational, interpersonal and project-management skills
Ability to prioritize and follow through effectively
Strong attention to detail
Proven track record in managing communications/marketing campaigns
Good analytical skills and the ability to monitor and evaluate campaign performance
Creatively minded with strong business acumen
An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity for disabled people
Open to travel as necessary
