Purpose of the Job

The purpose of the Accountant role is to meticulously perform accounting functions related to group insurance accounts, insurance fund management, and claims reconciliations, along with precise handling of general ledger account reconciliations.

Additionally, this role involves providing dedicated assistance to the Financial Manager in ad hoc projects, the creation of insightful reports, in-depth analysis, and effective query resolution. By upholding financial accuracy and offering valuable insights, the Accountant assumes a crucial role in enabling informed decision-making within the organisation.

Job Objectives

Accurate Insurance Accounting

Ensure precise recording of monthly insurance claims and premiums.

Prepare upload files for insurance transactions to be posted in the general ledger.

Verify the posting of budget entries.

Process monthly claims and annual premiums through journal entries.

Summarize ledger data effectively.

Conduct reconciliations to ensure financial accuracy.

Address and resolve insurance-related queries.

Prepare monthly financial reports for the financial manager.

Efficient Clearing Accounts Management

Maintain monthly clearance of clearing accounts.

Follow up on outstanding items within ledger clearing accounts.

Properly allocate uncleared items to correct ledger accounts.

Provide explanations for uncleared items during reconciliations.

Balancing Insurance Funds

Ensure that unpaid insurance claims account align with insurance system reports.

Process correcting journals to resolve any discrepancies on unreconciled items.

Oversight as an Expense Creditor Signatory

Verify payment advises against supporting documentation and authorise payments.

Timely Month-End and Year-End Reporting

Prepare accurate monthly and yearly financial reports.

Address management inquiries related to reports and reconciliations.

Assemble reconciliation files with accompanying documents.

Handle year-end journal processing for RSA Supermarkets (periods 13 - 16).

Execute monthly accrual reversals and revaluations.

Control and Reconciliation of Ad hoc GL Accounts

Post journal entries efficiently.

Analyse and report on general ledger accounts with precision.

Concisely summarise information.

Produce reconciliations for ledger accounts.

Assist in resolving management reconciliation queries and investigations.

Data Scrutiny and Adjustment

Scrutinise data exported from the insurance system

for accuracy and reasonability before integration into the accounting system.

Effective Management of Prepaid Expenses

Preparation of prepaid expense reconciliation.

Post monthly journals from account to relevant expenses.

Identify and reallocate invalid entries as required.

Support for New Projects and Analysis

Collaborate with the Financial Manager in researching processes for implementing new projects.

Aid in the design and testing of controls for newly implemented processes.

Assist the Financial Manager in conducting analytical reviews of Income Statement variances.

Proactively follow up with stakeholders to address missing entries and investigate variances, ensuring the validation of specific entries.

Support Group Insurance Manager

Review monthly cash-in-transit invoices.

Responsible for assisting the group insurance manager with the group insurance budget.

Prepare information for annual insurance policy renewal.

Assist group insurance manager with ad hoc queries and investigations.

Qualifications

BCom degree in Financial Accounting – (essential)

Completion of Accounting Articles – (desirable)

Experience

+3 years' experience in a financial orientated or accounting role with demonstrable experience in a retail buying, commercial or similar environment – (essential).??

Experience in insurance accounting – (desirable)

Experience in financial auditing – (desirable)

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards – (desirable)

Strong knowledge and application of accounting package systems and software (e.g., SAP, Pastel) – (SAP experience desirable)?

Solid understanding of Reconciliations
