The ILT Research Associate will join the ILT team to support key projects, with the main project focused in Juba, South Sudan. The Associate will travel extensively to Juba, South Sudan with a team to conduct data collection activities and capacity building exercises for South Sudanese peacebuilders.
The initial term of the contract for this position will be four months and will expire in February 2019, with potential for contract renewal contingent upon performance and funding.
Key Responsibilities
Roles and responsibilities include:
Research
Develop research tools with a focus on inclusive and participatory approaches
Collect qualitative data from pilot participants in the form of interviews, unstructured conversations or focus groups
Conduct quantitative data collection with program participants
Use qualitative codifying methodology to analyze large amounts of structured and unstructured data from multiple sources
Develop an understanding of social network analysis methodologies
Gender
Navigating intergroup dynamics through a gender-sensitive lense
Incorporating a gendered perspective into research methodologies and MEL frameworks
Travel
Travel as often as bi-monthly, accounting for up to 50% of time. Trips mostly to Juba, South Sudan, though other regional travel and travel to Washington, DC may also be planned as needed.
Engage with a variety of key stakeholders, building relationships with a group of young South Sudanese leaders and peace practitioners
Coordinate events, such as lunch and dinner meetings, with the Search South Sudan office
Work with South Sudanese youth to build capacities around design, monitoring, evaluation, learning and research
Collaborate with International Experts
Attend weekly meetings with a global team of experts in social network analysis and
relational analysis
Exchange ideas and feedback in an emergent learning process

Qualifications
You meet the following qualifications:
Education
Education and/or relevant work experience in conflict analysis and conflict monitoring research methods in international development, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, or other related fields (graduate level preferred)
Experience
Experience conducting research on gender issues in developing countries or conflict contexts
Excellent written and oral skills in English – ability to draft, edit, and proofread
Experience working or living in conflict affected and resource-scarce countries
Experience in data collection, conflict analysis and conflict monitoring research training
Good computer skills (including Word, Excel) and a propensity to learn new ones
Skills and Competencies
Proactive attitude and ability to work independently and in a team
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Familiarity with the Arabic language, especially spoken dialects of Sudani Arabic
Strong tolerance for ambiguity and emergent processes
Sincere curiosity and willingness to learn new tools and approaches
Experience working with qualitative data analysis software (e.g. Nvivo, Dedoose, RQDA)
