Job Summary:

  • The National SLL Director will work closely with the SLL Principal Investigator and ministry of health MCHD to provide leadership, coordination and management for the SLL project at national level and across all SLL implementing regions.

  • This position will also have role in representation of the SLL team in Ethiopia with UNICEF, government counterparts and health development partners.

  • The position will be given significant responsibility for the overall development and execution of the SLL implementation plan, including monitoring key deliverables and project achievements, as well as collaborating to design and carry out project activities.

    Specific Roles and Responsibilities include

  • Under guidance of the PI and ministry of health coordinate the SLL support to the ministry of health to effectively design and develop SLL implementation strategies and micro-plans to ensure successful implementation of the SLL packages across the hospital-health center-community continuum in the four implementation regions

  • Monitor implementation progress of the activities and interventions by reviewing, verifying and analyzing the micro-plans; work with the regional scale-up coordinators to develop and submit periodic and regular progress reports on the implementation status of the SLL micro-plans in the four regions

  • Develop schedule and facilitate organization of National Steering Committee and National Implementation Coordination Team meetings, serve as a secretary for the regular meetings, preparing meeting agenda and minutes
    Coordinate planning and implementation of national workshops to validate the SLL labor and delivery, KMC/NICU, and quality improvement (QI) packages, training curricula and monitoring and evaluation approaches

  • Closely work with the regional SLL scale-up coordinators across the four regions to effectively coordinate the implementation and facilitation of clinical mentorship trainings for labor and delivery, KMC/NICU, QI in the four regions

  • Ensure integration of SLL interventions within the ministry of health annual plans and alignment of programs of health development partners on care for preterm and low birth weight newborns

  • Work with relevant ministry of health departments and
    directorates to ensure integration and regular reporting of relevant indicators on care for preterm and LBW newborns in the DHIS2

  • Technically support National Child and Newborn case team at the ministry of health on neonatal health issues especially on preterm and low birth weight newborns programs

  • Perform other relevant project related assignments given by the PI as appropriate

    Job Requirements

    Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health with solid background knowledge on newborn and child health and at least five years of progressively responsible for the design and management of large-scale projects, research project management is a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience managing staff, budgets, and implementation of health (research) projects.

  • Familiarity with the Ethiopian health system, Ethiopian Ministry of Health and Regional Health Bureaus preferred.

  • Written and verbal fluency in English required.

  • Strong writing skills and exceptional oral and written communication skills required.

    Additional Qualifications

  • Must have the ability to represent the Project with external constituents, including the donor, international organizations, peer institutions, and Ethiopian government bodies.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, supervisory, and organizational skills necessary.

  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple project activities, balance conflicting priorities, and handle confidential information appropriately.

  • Must exhibit tact and diplomacy in inter-cultural settings.

  • Substantial experience in applied research or academic administration preferred.

  • Should be willing to abide by MOH’s rules and regulations including the health strategies and policy of the government

  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success leading collaborative projects and achieving exceptional operational results, and will possess a strong reputation for being an organized and dynamic leader.
