Save the Children NGO Global Assurance Manager Employment Opportunities in Kenya
Job DescriptionThe purpose of Global Assurance (GA) is to provide the Chief Executive and the Board of Trustees, through the Audit and Risk Committee, with an independent and objective assessment of the risk, control and governance arrangements in place at Save the Children International (SCI). This assessment results in an opinion on how effectively the organisation manages its risks; and includes assurance on the effectiveness of the 'first and second lines of defence'.
Responsibilities
Build strong relationships with clients across the organisation, and build deep expertise of our operations through a schedule of liaison meetings, internal training, and learning from audit work
Lead on/conduct outcomes-focused internal audit assignments – on time, to a high standard, within budget, and to GA’s methodology. Demonstrate deep internal audit and subject-matter expertise, rooted in the organisation’s ‘direction of travel’
Remain fully up-to-date on organisational changes, and actively seek engagement with issues that have a significant impact on GA’s current and potential assignments.
Deliver high quality, solutions-focussed, value-adding reports in the Global Assurance format that are clear, concise, timely, solutions-driven, and demonstrate a focus on ‘horizontal learning’ – ensuring that learning is identified and promoted and that good practice is shared across SCI
Provide intelligent input to the preparation of annual operational plan and support delivery of the strategic audit plan. Support the preparation of progress reports to the Audit & Risk Committee
Working with 2 Senior Auditors and 1 Auditor based in Nairobi, develop individual work plans that show the key deliverables expected and personal development plans that address key skills gaps; and provide regular appraisals to each auditor in your team
Quality assure audit work delivered by the team on the audits this role manages
Lead specific organisational projects; these may be for the Board or DGA.
Be cognizant to the risk of fraud and, where appropriate, work with the global fraud team to conduct investigations into cases of alleged fraud and/or serious negligence as required.
Support the DGA in contributing to systems/process development work within Save the Children International. This may include undertaking specific advisory work
Actively support the DGA in playing an influencing role in strengthening SCI’s control environment, making the assurance loop work well, and broadening the understanding of risk, controls, oversight and accountability in the organisation
Respond to queries raised by management or Save the Children member organisations, providing prompt and professional advice as appropriate.
Qualifications
Demonstrable experience of supervising and leading multi-disciplinary (preferably global) teams for short assignments
Proven ability and experience to communicate, negotiate and challenge risk and control practices at all levels of organisational hierarchy
Have an ‘outcomes’ focus with direct experience of understanding complex risks and processes, working understanding and experience of applying risk-based internal auditing and a good understanding of the three lines of defence model
Proven ability to focus on key issues and the ‘big picture’. As opposed to a compliance-only approach; and the ability to communicate these in writing
Have experience of leading, working on, and delivering multiple projects, with conflicting priorities, on a timely basis
Proven track record of producing high quality, effective oral and written communication in English for a wide range of audiences
Strong interpersonal skills including influencing, negotiation, coaching and relationship building in a wide range of cultural environments. Strong ability to deliver difficult messages with tact and confidence
Experience of working with little or no supervision under difficult conditions
A desire to work in countries where Save the Children International operates, some of which are fragile states. The travel will requirement will be 40-50%, but some flexibility would be required to cover any additional need.
Brings leadership qualities and is a strong brand ambassador for Global Assurance
Track record of continuously improving the way internal audit services are being delivered
The existing right to work in Kenya
Desirable
Exposure to large international commercial or INGO internal audit experience, with a focus on programmatic delivery and financial analysis, where possible for large institutional donors such as DfID, USAID, ECHO, and EC
An understanding of the grant requirements of major donors, specifically USAID, EU, DfID, Global Fund
Some knowledge of Agresso financial software
Proficiency in a second core language of Save the Children (French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic).
