Role Purpose:

  • Save the Children has launched its ambitious 2019 – 2021 strategic plan with the aim of significantly increasing both unrestricted and smart restricted funds (smart restricted is defined as income from corporate partnerships and major donors that funds the priority programmes for children).
    Global Philanthropy is a recent priority area within Save the Children International and increasingly strategic and crucial across the whole organisation.

  • The Head of Global Philanthropy Development will join the Global Fundraising & Marketing Hub of Save the Children International that provides strategic support and technical guidance to our national Members in Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America. A number of the team members work remotely and the location of this job is flexible. The role will involve travel to lead on and support philanthropy in new markets as well as more established ones.

  • This is a very senior role, interacting with senior fundraisers and leaders internationally. We are looking for an experienced and passionate professional to support, join up, and grow the global Save the Children community of philanthropy, and support and drive the global strategy for major gifts.

    The Head of Global Philanthropy Development will:

    • Lead on identifying, developing and promoting best practice in philanthropy across the Save the Children movement, in order to build internal capacity and increase long-term income.

    • Take responsibility to support, strengthen and grow the global community of Major Donors practitioners.

    • Lead on building capacity across our global movement, including building expertise and skills in philanthropy prospecting, proposition development, pitching and market analysis for new and growth opportunities with major donors to drive increased value and impact at national and global levels.

    • Be responsible for developing and managing a strategy focused on identifying our top future prospects globally, and building a clear approach to enable us to fully leverage these and existing opportunities by working with colleagues around the world.

    • Be responsible for supporting the identification, shaping and development of strategic growth opportunities with a wide range of key prospects by working in close collaboration with colleagues globally.

    Key Areas of Accountability :

    Strategic Leadership

    • Working closely with the Fundraising Directors’ Steering Group (FRDSG) and senior colleagues globally as part of the Global Fundraising & Marketing Hub, helping to enable the organisation to deliver against and exceed financial targets and broader philanthropy KPI’s, driving forward sector leading strategic relationships with philanthropists.

    • Develop and lead an ambitious global strategy and approach to secure new philanthropy opportunities in line with global organisational priorities, identifying top prospects and working with colleagues and Members.

    • Set up and support a Major Donors Leaders Group in order to further develop and promote best practices and to identify, win and maximise global philanthropy opportunities

    • Seek, identify and support opportunities to secure long term relationships, to deliver accelerated and ambitious growth for the organisation

    • Make key leadership decisions which can significantly affect the results of philanthropy growth and our external positioning as a sector leading organisation

    • Work collaboratively with colleagues globally on cross organisational projects and provide strategic insight from a philanthropy perspective

    • Create and promote linkages and cross collaboration with other leaders and teams, especially from the corporate partnerships and individual fundraising areas.

    Skill Sharing:create effective links and greater dialogue within the major donors community and other relevant stakeholders around philanthropic themes and opportunities.

    • Lead and facilitate philanthropy skill-sharing initiatives across major donors practitioners, across the Fundraising Directors group and Member Growth

    • Responsible for identifying successful initiatives or innovations that have the potential to be successfully scaled in other markets, and share them with these markets

    • In order to build and retain the best talent across the international organisation, promote talent management opportunities across the movement where possible to allow staff opportunities to share their knowledge with other markets for the benefit of the movement

  • Acting as a senior representative for the organisation, including attending meetings, events and leading strategic opportunities as needed

    • Represent Save the Children externally at a senior level, positioning us as organisation of
    choice

    • Represent and position Save the Children as a leader for children’s, women’s and youth programmes during relevant events, either in person or ensuring local representation

    • Identify and share knowledge on key global trends in philanthropy, ensuring that Save the Children’s approach and strategy is reflective of the opportunities and external environment

    • Oversight & Management

    • Oversee delivery of a range of globally shared services to enhance our consistency and best practice approaches to philanthropy

    • Track and monitor progress against global targets and KPIs, identifying solutions and course correcting where needed

    • Carry out the responsibilities of the role in a way that reflects Save the Children’s commitment to safeguarding, in accordance with the Child Safeguarding Policy.

    Qualifications

    • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience

    • MBA or Business-related masters ideally

    Experience and Skills:

    • A deep understanding of the breadth of NGO models that exist across the sector globally and a clear vision for how Save the Children can differentiate itself among its peers to be the organisation of choice

    • A proven track record in leading and delivering within a large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders, preferably in an international development charity or similar

    • A demonstrable and sophisticated understanding of the complexities of international philanthropy and associated challenges and solutions

    • Proven experience of leading a new initiative or strategy to achieve desired growth outcomes

    • Proven track record of developing and managing a major gifts portfolio and a proven track record for prospecting, cultivating, and closing gifts in a large charity or international organization

    • Experience with wealth advisory work, venture capital, or private equity is preferred, as many individual contributions stem from Save the Children’s work with corporations

    • Excellent written and presentation skills and confident ability to deliver verbal and written proposals up to CEO level

    • Experienced in managing an opportunity/sales pipeline delivering successful outcomes

    • Experience of negotiating, influencing and delivering results internally and externally

    • Proven experience of providing creative and innovative approaches in developing new initiatives that contribute towards departmental targets

    • Experience in budget management

    • Experience with fundraising database systems, wealth screenings, and prospect tracking management and reporting.

    • An established leader with personal gravitas and ability to work with senior executives

    • Acts without guidance on a frequent basis, limited oversight required

    • A proven team player. Someone who is open and who is able and willing to deliver beyond his or her personal brief

    • Ability to network with, and influence, senior people both internally and externally in order to achieve a pre-defined outcome

    • External orientation, someone who is focused on our supporters

    • Proven ability to work collaboratively across departmental boundaries internally and externally to achieve shared organisational goals

    • A strategic thinker who is able prioritise and balance a busy work load • Someone with the skill to drive new initiatives in a large organisation

    • Resilient during set-backs and able to lead others onto the next success

    • High fluency in written and spoken English essential and second language of Member country ideally.
