Save the Children Gender Advisor Jobs in Uganda
The Shared Gender Advisor is a senior position based in Uganda, but supporting three country offices (Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan) to strengthen quality in gender equality and gender transformative programming across a portfolio of projects.
The position is strategically designed to support in-country gender coordinators and/or gender focal persons and technical specialists, while providing cross-learning and support to all three countries and the wider region.
A key marker of success will be measurable improvements in gender equality programming, and how it strengthens positive results for children.
The Advisor is expected to provide technical inputs and guidance throughout the project lifecycle, from community assessment to proposal development and design, through implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Responsibilities
The Advisor will distil learnings from this portfolio to produce programming guidance related to Save the Children’s Gender Policy and Gender Equality Marker, thought leadership on gender integration in proposal design, and strategic planning to ensure gender is more fully incorporated into our work for children.
In addition, the Advisor will stay abreast of programming developments within Save the Children, such as Common Approaches, and industry developments while maintaining relationships with key players in the thematic space and within Save the Children Members.
The focus of this position is to build in-country capacity to exceed expectations on high-quality gender programming, and facilitate a community of practice in East and Southern Africa for cross-learning. The position requires regular travel in East Africa.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
6 -9 years’ field work experience implementing, managing, and/or providing technical assistance to programs in developing countries with a focus on gender equality; focus on child and youth programming desirable.
Proven experience with gender-transformative child rights programming in areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Livelihoods, Maternal, Newborn and Child Heath, and/or Education.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to present clearly and effectively at all levels, as well as cross-culturally, and manage through influence.
Experience in writing gender transformative proposals and/or integrating gender effectively in design, especially large and complex programmes in both development and humanitarian settings.
Proven ability to conduct gender assessments of individual projects, and a portfolio of projects.
Training skills, both face-to-face and by webinars, to communicate new information and change behaviours amongst professionals of all levels.
Strong results orientation, with the ability to challenge existing mindsets.
Ability to synthesize and develop high-quality knowledge products from diverse data sources including programmatic materials and tools.
Experience working independently and solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in from multiple stakeholders.
Ability to present complex information in a succinct and compelling manner.
Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple requests and organise time and resources efficiently to achieve priority results.
Fluency in English, both verbal and written, required.
Commitment to Save the Children values, including willingness to abide by and enforce the Child Safeguarding policy.
Desirable:
Significant experience in the region
Demonstrated thought
leadership expertise such as contributions to academic journals, books, articles; speaking engagements, workshop facilitation, leading conference presentations and pane
Experience in working as a Gender Equality Advisor in humanitarian contexts is considered an asset
Contract length: 1 year, renewable
Location: Kampala, Uganda or Kigali, Rwanda
