Role Purpose:

The ECCE Creative Adaptation Specialist is a member of the USAID/LEGO Foundation supported Childhood development Project team. The project is implemented by Save the Children Ethiopia Office and local partners targeting crisis-affected pre-primary school age children in five regions of Ethiopia.

The ECCE Creative Adaptation Specialist will produce child- centered and friendly ECCE audio lessons, dramas, dialogues, stories and songs through the use of technology. S/he will also map exiting audio and video productions on ECCE and adapt them into audio and print tailored ECCE lessons, messages, dramas, stories, and dialogues to promote playful learning in ECCE centers.

The role holder will also produce or adapt context specific dialogues and dramas to promote parental discussion at a community level on different early childhood development themes (such as SEL, PSS, Emergent literacy, emergent numeracy, motor skills development) relevant to conflict and drought affected areas.

The specialist is expected to involve in the production/adaptation of ECCE video lessons to be used in the regional Teacher Education Colleges ECCE resource centers, and produce/adapt play based print cartons to inspire children play in ECCE centers’.

S/he is also expected to involve in the provision training to local implementing partners on the use of digitalized lessons, dramas, dialogues, stories, and songs to facilitate interactive engagement of young children at ECCE center and with parents at a community level, as well as the provision of coaching and mentoring support to ECCE/Pre-primary school teachers in the use of radio lessons to promote play in ECC centers, and in parental group sessions.

Role Dimensions:

The ECCE Creative Adaptation Specialist will collaborate with the project’s teams as well as the country office’s ACCM team to integrate gender, conflict sensitivity disability and other applicable and desirable social norm issues into audio-taped ECCE lessons, dramas, dialogues, stories, songs, radio broadcast and print materials.

She/he will monitor and provide in person supports to ECCE/pre-primary school teachers and parental group facilitators on the use of audiotaped lessons, songs, dialogues, dramas, stories to facilitate playful learning at ECCE center and community level.

She/he works in close collaboration with radio broadcast officer in the preparation of radiobroadcast messages on different ECCE themes., collaborate with LIP staff to ensure the regular use of Solar Radio sessions to facilitate playful interaction among children, and active discussion among parents in parental group session. The role holder will also involve in the production of radio dialogues, role play, stories, songs and drama for ECCE facilitators’ Teacher Learning Circle session based on play.

Key Areas of Accountability:

Technical Leadership:

  • Support in the mapping of existing audio, video and print production on Early Childhood Care and Education that are prepared in the form of learning lessons, drama, dialogue, key messages, songs and stories and adapt them to be used in audio and print forms to be used in conflict and drought affected areas.

  • Support in the development/adaptation of teachers’ guide on how to use audio dramas, dialogues, songs, stories, learning lessons and print materials in playful way

  • Involve in the organization ECCE TE resource centers and organize learning platforms for target ECCE centers facilitators to benefit from the technology based resource centers

  • Lead the the production/adaptation of ECCE video lessons, dramas, stories, songs for target ECCE facilitators and TE college use

  • Lead and support in the production/adaptation of all audio and print materials on ECCE to demonstrate conflict sensitivity, gender transformation and disability inclusion.

  • Collaborate with LIP staff to ensure guideline on the use audio and print productions are used and promoted playful learning in the ECCE centers.

  • Involve in the production tailored audio and print messages on SEL, PSS and parenting education

  • Collaborate with LIP staff to ensure audio and print messages in the form of drama, stories, songs are used in
    monthly TLC sessions to promote playful interaction between the ECCE facilitators and young children

    Ensuring Programme Quality (Design & Implementation):

  • Work closely with new business development colleagues to identify and pursue funding

  • Prepare the technical scoping and sequencing of tailored audio and print production on ECCE in the form of drama, dialogues, stories, songs, and learning lessons.

  • Prepare/adapt graphics and pictorials full of fun and play with and learn particular skill

  • Involve in the Provision of capacity building training to LIP staff on the use of audio and print productions to promote play in ECCE centers or at home.

  • Collaborate with LIP staff to ensure TE college ECCE resource centers’ video and audio productions are used by target ECCE center’/preprimary school teachers

  • Collaborate with LIP staff to ensure the adapted/developed audio and print production on ECCE in the form of drama, dialogues, stories and songs are used in ECCE centers and at parental group session using the solar radios

  • Participate in the production of tailored key messages on ECCE different themes and follow up that they are aired through regional and national radio broadcasted to influence stakeholders in the expansion of ECCE in the conflict and disaster affected areas

  • Collaborate with LIP staff in coaching and mentoring of pre-primary school teachers on the use of audio and print productions in promoting playful learning through dramatized messages, dialogues, stories and songs.

  • Participate in SCI-Education sector community of practice on lessons and evidences generated from the use of tailored ECCE audio and print productions.

  • Conduct joint field visits with LIP staff to provide on-site coaching and mentoring on the use of audiotaped lessons, dramas, dialogues, stories and songs promoting playful learning to pre-primary school teachers.

    Networking & External Engagement:

  • Work with district ECCEiE actors ( NGOs, CBOs, CSOs and community gate keepers) to collect and adapt tailored stories, dialogues, songs dramas into audio and print production usable at ECCE centers and in community level parental group discussion.

  • Participate in district level ECCE technical working groups learning forums to demonstrate the role tailored locally customized audio and print production/adaptation in promoting playful learning

  • Work with community leaders, CBOs and CSOs members to develop story narrations, inputs for dialogue and drama write-up and adaptation.

  • Work with technical colleagues from ECCEiE project and across Save the Children-Education, Child Protection and communication teams at a field level to produce and adapt tailored ECCE messages for radiobroadcast.

    Qualifications

  • BA degree, Creative Arts, Film and Audio Production, Theatrical Arts, literature, Journalism and related field in the social sciences

  • Training in the production educational audio and video scripts, dramatic learning lessons, local children stories, dramas, dialogues using technology

    Experience and Skills

  • At least 8 years of similar experience in the production of audio, video and print lessons in dramatized and playful ways preferably targeting children

  • Experience in the preparation of play script , song, drama, local stories with moral values that nurture young children’s development in playful way

  • Awareness of regional contexts particularly in conflict affected areas of northern Ethiopia and disaster/drought affected areas of southern Ethiopia.

  • Experience in developing/adopting stories for children to interact and learn from their interaction.

  • Able to us digital equipment to artfully photograph, videotape, record and transcribe them into tailored messages

  • Experience in coaching and mentoring

  • Good reporting and writing skills in English and relevant other local languages
