Joining Forces to End Violence Against Children is a global collaboration between 6 leading child rights organisations - ChildFund, Plan International, Save the Children, SOS Children’s Villages, Terre des Hommes and World Vision. In Uganda Joining Forces focuses on ending violence against children in schools. Working together means we can better influence policy and decision makers, share expertise, information and innovation; scale up what works and maximize our impact.
The Advocacy and Communications Coordinator supports the Coalition Coordinator in the development and implementation of the Joining Forces overall Advocacy Strategy and Communications Plan.
Based on Joining Forces priorities, they support the identification of key issues for advocacy, preparing and implementing strategies and messages to the relevant stakeholders.
The role holder oversees Joining Forces advocacy and communications activities at national and regional levels and gives support to the field teams in relation to material development, capacity building and implementation of activities with key duty bearers.
The Advocacy and Communications Coordinator maintains effective relationships with government representatives and media in support of our advocacy work.
Experience and Skills
Essential:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in mass communication, social sciences, social work and social administration, development studies, education. Post graduate training in a relevant discipline is an added advantage.
At least 3-7 years progressive experience in advocacy/communication, stakeholder engagement, fundraising and media relations in an international NGO.
Proven experience of developing and delivering an advocacy and campaign strategy
Good and demonstrated understanding of Child rights issues in Uganda and in the NGO world.
Accurate, punctual and quality
driven, with strong ability to give attention to detail.
Ability to document and transform experiences from the field into lessons learnt.
Skills of political analysis, sensitivity and diplomacy. Demonstrated understanding of current political situation necessary to effectively and tactfully capture news from our field work and draft articles.
Ability to deliver and cope with very dynamic work situations, leisure disruption and very tight deadlines.
Desirable
Ability and willingness to undertake periodic field travel to up-country and in insecure areas.
Interpersonal skills, customer care skills, contributing to synergies and effective liaison between senior management, the unit staff and program staff.
Computer literacy and excellent documentation and desk top publishing skills are a must.
Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
Ability to intervene with crisis management or troubleshooting as necessary.
Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching
Excellent time management and planning capacity
Excellent writing skills
Willingness to work flexible hours as needed
