This role reports to the Divisional Environmental Manager.
The main responsibilities of this job are:
Working with business unit leaders, define certification requirements to meet customer expectation and other business needs.
Manage Sappi Forests’ sustainable forest management and chain of custody certification requirements
Manage all Sappi Group Schemes’ sustainable forest management certification requirements
Establish and maintain a strong control environment across all operations for the tracking of inputs and consumption of forest certification credits
Maintain monthly and annual summaries on timber sales as required for the business and certification bodies
Develop and implement a training programs across Sappi Forests business units and Growers to instil understanding of 3rd party certification programs
Facilitate continuous improvement by identifying efficiency improvement opportunities in forest certification and other forest risk management activities
Facilitate the development, review and implementation of audit checklists and provide advice and support to users to ensure certification requirements are met
Develop and implement a monitoring timeframe and strategy for Growers and carry out regular internal audits of their forest management activities.
Facilitate external audits by engaging with the stakeholders and supporting the audit process to ensure certification is achieved
Communicate performance by reporting across the organisation to promote understanding of certification standards
Engage
with Sappi business units and Growers, to ensure good understanding of all the elements of the certification programme and compliance therewith
Build excellent relationships with certification bodies and other internal and external stakeholders.
Serve as an internal consultant for business regarding certification standards.
Respond to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders.
Ensure that the Sappi corporate image is upheld, risks are mitigated and that relationships continuously improve.
The ideal candidate should have:
Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or Environmental Science related
A MSc degree in the relevant field will be advantageous
At least 5 years relevant experience in forest management
Knowledge of Sappi operations preferred
Knowledge of certification processes.
Proficiency in isiZulu will be advantageous
