RefugePoint was founded in 2005 to provide lasting solutions for the world’s most vulnerable refugees.
We work to fill the critical and unmet needs of people affected by war and conflict that have fallen through the net of humanitarian assistance, in particular women, children and urban refugees.
The Training Manager (TM) will be responsible for knowledge management and knowledge transfer by building and managing learning opportunities related to the approach to refugee self-reliance implemented by RefugePoint’s Urban Refugee Protection Program (URPP) in Nairobi.
In doing so, the TM will work in close consultation with the Kenya Country Director and relevant staff at RefugePoint HQ including the Senior Programs Officer, Managing Director and Chief Strategy Officer.
Core responsibilities of the position are as follows:
Development, implementation and dissemination of a comprehensive learning and training program
Observe and document elements of RefugePoint’s programs (vertical and integrated) that can serve as the basis of shared learning and model replication by others;
Conduct observation visits and needs assessments to partner organizations, as requested, to determine their specific needs and “right fit” for training and technical assistance;
Develop and update training materials for use in training/onboarding new RefugePoint staff, and providing ongoing training for existing staff. This includes collaboration with cross-program/functional staff to ensure that content is accurate and complete;
Identify, facilitate and conduct trainings for RefugePoint staff (onboarding and professional development), including “training of trainers” to prepare them for providing technical assistance to others;
Develop and package curricula, utilizing dynamic training and learning dissemination methods/formats for all internal and external training needs (experiential, mentoring, coaching, fixed site, e-learning, workshops, simulations, self-directed study, etc.)
Assist each unit within the URPP in improving its client- and public-facing presentations and trainings;
Assist with the coordination and execution of workshops organized by RefugePoint;
Work with the communications team on visitor learning agendas for donors, board members, operational partners, and other visitors to the Nairobi office, including provision of written information to visitors;
Create guidelines for adapting materials for use
in other settings and among differing populations.
Disseminate training materials to partner organizations, in coordination with the staff named above.
Develop and maintain partnerships for shared learning
Identify strategic partners that RefugePoint can work with on learning and technical assistance collaborations related to refugee self-reliance; help build and expand these partnerships;
Represent RefugePoint at Refugee Self-Reliance Community of Practice meetings both locally and globally and assist with coordination as needed.
Support the development of local and regional learning networks and partnerships to expand self-reliance efforts.
Attend to any other duties as assigned by the Country Director
Desired Skills and Qualifications
Degree in International Relations, Social Work, Humanitarian Affairs, Adult Education or a related field; Master’s degree preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required;
Excellent public presentation skills and comfort with training large and small groups required;
At least three years’ experience nonprofit humanitarian work, international work experience highly preferred;
Experience using participatory learning approaches and familiarity with adult learning techniques required;
Prior work with refugee-focused organizations preferred;
Demonstrated experience assessing needs (knowledge, skills, practice) among internal and external audiences;
Demonstrated experience in developing learning strategies that reflect the importance of the local environment and context (language, culture, socio-political, power, etc.);
Demonstrated experience and expertise in developing and facilitating workshops and/or other types of trainings related to humanitarian affairs;
Superior writing ability and ability to synthesize and distill complex information; Experience writing training materials and curricula highly preferred;
Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills;
English language fluency required;
Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, maintaining flexibility and attention-to-detail;
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and cloud-computing platforms;
Ability to travel internationally; and
Willingness and ability to maintain a flexible work schedule due to communication with field locations.
