Job Details

  • Prospero’s Food and Agriculture sector has thus far focused on improving the competitiveness of locally produced agricultural products to end consumer markets in Zambia.

  • However, there are increasing export opportunities, both regionally and globally, for Zambian agricultural products such as goats, sheep, fish, pig, tubers, fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables and other high value products.

  • Zambian products have often been exported as raw materials where a lot of the value-added income is lost to an intermediary or processor in another country, such as South Africa.

  • Currently, there are limited local private sector players across value chains that focus on aggregation, processing and export of agricultural products to ensure more income opportunities are retained in Zambia.

  • Prospero is looking for a technical advisor who will be able to provide an overview of the export opportunities for Zambian MSMEs in Food and Agriculture and work closely with several Prospero partners strengthen the competitiveness of the sector regionally and globally. .

    Objectives

    • To assess the feasibility for Prospero partners to supply export markets regionally and globally.

    • To co-develop commercially viable business models with these partners and the Prospero sector team.

    • To promote knowledge/skills transfer between the Technical advisor and the Prospero Food and Agriculture sector team.

    • To effectively support the implementation and delivery of the Prospero Food and Agriculture sector strategy to enhance competitiveness of the sector regionally and globally.

    Scope of Work

    To achieve these objectives, the technical advisor will be responsible for:

    • Conducting an assessment with Prospero’s potential and current partners to:

    • identify concrete export markets and their requirements for entry.

    • assess the needs of Prospero intervention partners in terms of capital, capacity, compliance and connections/networks to be able to supply to these export markets and developing relevant interventions as needed to address these needs.

    • Co-develop a business model with Prospero partners that will facilitate the export of the relevant products to these markets. This business model should consider exploring an improved aggregation model to export diverse products.

    • If this
    model proves to be commercially viable, the technical advisor will provide coaching and mentoring to the selected intervention partners to pilot the first phase of the business model.
    In addition, the technical advisor will be responsible for supporting the Food and Agriculture sector team to:

    • Management current and future Prospero partners in relation to export interventions in the Food and Agriculture Sector.

    • Ensure that all interventions provide value for money and reach the maximum possible number of MSMEs.

    • Maintain and build Prospero’s credibility and reputation within relevant sectors.

    Deliverables

    • Report on assessment of the identified export markets, Prospero partner needs and busines models.

    • Business models developed with selected Prospero partners for grant proposal submission.

    • Coaching and mentoring of the selected Prospero partners to implement the export business models.

    Profile

  • To achieve these objectives, the technical advisor should have a combination of academic qualifications and technical expertise relevant to the role.

    We expect candidates to have:

    • an advanced university degree and/or relevant industry experience that demonstrates technical expertise, understanding of the food and agriculture sector and the specific products mentioned above and significant experience of working in the regional and international export sector in Zambia.

    • strong relationships and network in the food and agriculture sector regionally and globally.

    • experience in international food safety standards, export protocols, organic certifications, and international market preferences.

    • experience coaching and/or mentoring Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.

    To achieve these objectives, the technical advisor will have the following desirable attributes:
