Purpose:

Support the Government of Malawi, Ministry of Gender Community Development and Social Welfare to develop a national parenting curriculum and age-specific parenting manuals. The curriculum should be evidence based and culturally relevant. The process should involve reviewing existing parenting curricula so that the findings and recommendations should inform the design of the new Malawi Parenting curriculum.

Specific Objectives:

  • Conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to understand the current parenting challenges and parental needs.

  • In-depth review of existing parenting curricula being used in Malawi and the southern Africa region.

  • Develop a comprehensive national parenting curriculum.

  • Develop age -specific parenting manuals (0-2, 3-5, 6-9,10-<18)

  • Ensure that materials are culturally relevant, inclusive, accessible
    and aligning to national policies and legal framework.

  • Pilot the curriculum and manuals with selected groups of parents for feedback and refinement.

  • Consolidate findings and lessons learned.

  • Consolidate a methodology and justification/rationale of developing the Malawi parenting curriculum and age specific parenting manuals.

    Deliverables:

  • Inception report (understanding of the task, workplan, methodology and tools)

  • Needs Assessment Report

  • Draft National Parenting Curriculum

  • Draft Age-Specific Parenting Manual

  • Pilot Report

  • Final National Parenting Curriculum and Manuals

  • Training materials/Resources (e.g. slides, charts, posters, picture codes)

  • Final consultancy report

    Minimum Requirements

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Social Sciences, International Development, Social welfare, Child development disciplines.

  • Expert skills and evidence supported technical capacity in Social Welfare, Child Protection, Social Protection and Parenting methodologies and curriculums development.

  • 5-10 years relevant working experience of similar scope, complexity, and depth with similar social welfare tasks in social science disciplines.

  • Evidence of similar assignments undertaken in the region particularly in Malawi or Sub-Saharan Africa in social welfare sectors.

  • Past traceable references of similar assignments (strategy document development, reviews, and evaluations).
