Preparations for KCPE and KCSE exams get underway | Nation

The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has resumed preparations for this year’s primary and secondary schools national exams.

Headteachers are required to submit registration details of candidates for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations next week.

Acting Knec chief executive Mercy Karogo has directed all sub county directors of education to collect registration nominal rolls from school heads between October 4 and 9.

“That during the time, Knec officers will collect the 2020 KCPE and KCSE registration nominal rolls. In regard to this, you are requested to have collected them from the heads of institutions,” said Dr Karogo in a circular seen by Nation.

She has also asked the headteachers to give details of students registered as private candidates in their schools.

During registration, the candidates’ personal details are filled in an online portal and the school heads are required to verify the online report for accuracy.

Nominal rolls

Thereafter they download the list of candidates, sign, and stamp the reports that constitute the nominal rolls being submitted to county officials.

The national exams were to start this month, but were postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic that prompted closure of schools in March.

The Education ministry has proposed that candidates sit the exams in April next year.

Dr Karogo also announced college students will sit Knec business, technical, early childhood education and special needs education exams on October 12, a week after resuming learning.

“Delivery of the materials for the 2020 candidates will be between October 4 and 9,” she disclosed.

In a September 30 circular to national polytechnics, technical and vocational colleges and private technical and business studies colleges, the Education ministry announced that Knec rehearsals will be done on October 8.

The candidates were to sit the examinations in March.

Knec had postponed business national examinations for colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Tvets) until further notice following closure of learning institutions.

The ministry also announced that Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examination Board (Kasneb) exams will start from December 7 to 18.

Kasneb had also postponed this year’s May examinations.

Tvet acting director Tom Mulati has given details of the new calendar for Tvets.

“However the planned dates are subject to change depending on prevailing information and trends on Covid-19 infections at the disposal of the multi-agency monitoring teams.

In such instances, a supplementary communication shall be issued,” Mr Mulati said.

On Tuesday, Education Cabinet secretary George Magoha directed universities, teacher training colleges and Tvets to reopen for face-to-face learning on October 5, starting with examination classes.

Prof Magoha also asked management of the institutions to announce resumption dates for the other classes, with priority being accorded to students undertaking practical courses
