Job Description:The Population Council seeks applications from highly experienced, active and self-motivated Ethics and Child Protection Officer with experience in Child Protection activities and ethical issues for a forthcoming project on education for marginalized girls funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
Based in Addis Ababa with a frequent travel to Shashemene, Awassa and Bahir Dar Cities, the Ethics and Child Protection Officer is responsible for implementation of safeguarding and child protection policies, ensuring research activities abide by ethical guidelines, and training and follow-up of procedures.
Responsibilities: Update and implement the Organization’s child protection policy and procedures.
Developing training manuals on child safeguarding policy and procedures for staff, beneficiaries and the community.
Organize review meetings with partners for reviewing the adequacy and proper implementation of Child safeguarding policy and procedures and update policies as required.
Reviewing the policies of sub-contractors who may work with the Council have child protection policy
Raise awareness of the Child Protection role to parents/carers, adults, children and staff of Population Council
Training mentors and supervisors, Council’s staff members on the Council’s child protection policy and ethical procedures and perform related spot checks.
Ensure that all Council studies strictly adhere to ethical guidelines from both local and international review boards.
Maintain records of the ethical review process
and ensure recordkeeping is up-to-date.
Conduct and maintain updated service mapping for child protection mechanisms,
Keep abreast of developments in the field of child protection and ethical standards by liaising with the HQ
Respond appropriately to disclosures or concerns which relate to the well-being of a child and ensure adequate follow-up, reporting and investigation takes place.
Maintain confidential records of reported cases and ensure action taken as appropriate.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
University degree in sociology, law or relevant field.
At least 5 years’ experience in a similar role and experience with child protection issues and ethical issues
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, function as a team player.
Demonstrate flexibility, excellent communication, organizational, and prioritization skills.
Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to follow procedures, conscientious and efficient in meeting deadlines and achieving results.
Understanding and appreciation of the need for confidentiality
Work both independently and cooperatively with team members.
Willingness to travel in Ethiopia.
