Role Purpose

  • Plan International Ethiopia is looking for an Advocacy and Communications Coordinator (ACC) for a five-year project, “PlayMatters”, funded by the LEGO Foundation.

  • This position will be a part of the larger PlayMatters initiative to increase play-based learning opportunities for nearly 1 million pre-primary and primary school aged refugee and host community children impacted by the humanitarian crises in East Africa and living in Ethiopia and Uganda

    Job Resposnibilities

  • Work closely with program team members to ensure the development and dissemination of integrated, aligned, well-targeted, measurable advocacy and communication messages, including social media strategy.

  • Shape the external face and policy engagement of Plan International Ethiopia within the Lego Play Matters project and its Learning through Play Strategy (LtP).

  • Package and disseminating relevant information & communication materials in relation to LEGOs Play Matters programming to target groups and stakeholders in order to promote its Learning through Play approach.

  • Attend EIE meetings and other education fora and events to promote Learning through Play.

  • Facilitate a Communication and advocacy awareness Workshop organized to stakeholders who have an active role in managing EIE and ECCD projects. The aim of the workshop is awareness of the importance of Learning Through Play and the role of each one in this process;

  • Provide high level advice to departmental units/locations on the management and workflows of information and records.

  • Develop communication & advocacy materials, such as fact sheets, Power Point presentations, brochures, and blog posts.

  • Conduct campaigns and disseminating achievements and lesson learnt aimed at realizing the goals in strengthening internal and external communication, branding and marketing.

  • Track and maintain a calendar of external engagement opportunities and contacts, and assist in meeting and conference planning and preparation

  • Ensure project stories, photographs and videos are developed and plan's external website and social media are regularly updated with that information;

  • In close collaboration with the relevant staff, determine the primary data and information elements that are required internally and externally to support decision making;

  • Together with other relevant staff, design and implement a structured dissemination plan for all products and information services (eg, reports, data, maps) through, for example, a hard copy, CD-ROMs and websites;

    Representation

  • Represent Plan International Ethiopia and liaise with government stakeholders, donors, local and international NGOs and any other relevant stakeholders.

  • Work in close coordination with Emergency Response (EIE and CPIE) Lead to ensure effective design and implementation of information materials.

    Job Requirements

    Skills and Knowledge

  • B.A/MA Degree in in communication, social sciences, information management or a similar field

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in advocacy, communications, and dissemination in an international environment with good understanding of the current development and humanitarian trends and issues

  • Previous experience on using social media and website
    or managing online communication;

  • Proven experience of communicating information and advocacy with a wide range of different audiences

  • Ability to review and edit reports and other written documentation for dissemination and publication

  • Ability to collect information and undertake research under potentially difficult and constraining conditions

  • Ability to present information and communication products for a range of different audiences

  • Willingness to work and travel in difficult circumstances and adhere to agreed-upon security procedures

  • Knowledge of international humanitarian/development system and the mandates of the actors involved

  • Knowledge of donor communication and visibility requirements

  • Experience in social media as well as media liaison and media tools e.g. photography, video etc. Experience of photos, still and video editing preferred;

  • Hands-on experience of social media platforms eg. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, preferably also of blogging and understanding of the principle behind social media, and their potential to deliver interactive communications;

  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, Migration Policy, Refugee law and its application.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, training and facilitation skills

    Language requirements

  • Fluency in written and spoken Amharic and English is required.

  • Child protection and gender equality policies are understood by the staff and partners.

  • Support partners in understanding plans’ gender equality strategy and program criteria and capacity building activities on gender as part of the regular work at field level.

  • Ensure the representation of Plan Ethiopia in their respective region from gender equality perspectives.
