PhD Graduate Fellowships in Kenya and Ethiopia - Cross Scale Political Economy
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a PhD Graduate Fellow in Cross Scale Political Economy to analyse how adaptive capacity in East African livestock systems is socially differentiated and cross-scale dynamics affect the outcomes of adaptation interventions.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock.
It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.
Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional of country offices in East, South and Southern Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.
The Position:
Climate change adaptation in East African livestock systems will require significant transformations, both in animal keeping techniques as well as economic and political organization.
In adaptation research, much attention is given to household technical practices, but much less attention is given to creation of enabling institutional environments through social change.
Still less attention has been given to climate change adaptation as an inherently contested and political process which will play out through existing aspects of social differentiation.
As climate adaptation moves from conceptual discussion points to practical interventions and investments, more research is needed into how current institutional environments enable and/or constrain effective transformations as well as how household, sectoral and national policy dynamics interact.
The objective of this PhD project is to analyse how adaptive capacity in East African livestock systems is socially differentiated and cross-scale dynamics affect the outcomes of adaptation interventions.
