Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) is a Japanese Non-Governmental Organization established in 1996. PWJ has been providing humanitarian and development assistance for people affected by forced displacement and natural disasters in more than 20 countries in the world.
PWJ launched its mission in Kenya in 2012 and has been implementing projects funded by UN agencies and the government of Japan in shelter, WASH and youth development to improve living environments of refuge and host populations while promoting peaceful coexistence and self-reliance in the communities in Dadaab, Kakuma and Kalobeyei.
PWJ is UNHCR partner responsible for WASH, Warehouse, motor vehicle/generator service Unit and fleet and fuel management for Kakama and Dadaab Refugee Operations.
Job Overview:Reporting to the Transport Officer, the Tractor & Machinery Operator will be responsible for tractor, crane, backhoe loader and forklift operations to oversee solid waste management, digging of dumping sites in Hagadera, Dagahaley and Ifo Camps. In addition, he will give support to the WASH team in discharging sanitation duties. He/she will observe the safety standards related to heavy machinery operations to avert damage to property and injury.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesTractor and machinery operations.Carry out daily routine machine checks and minor repairs.
Advising management on service and requirements.
Scheduling tractor and machinery operations in liaison with Sanitation Officer.
Maintain an up to date fueling record and log for the tractor and the allocated vehicles.
Haul or lift to load and offload heavy machines such as generators and containers.
Deliver sanitation and other materials to destinations required.
Refuse management
Collect animal carcasses for proper disposal.
Waste collection and disposal from disposal sites (from collection points to landfill or appropriate points.)
Participate Camp cleaning campaigns.
Sensitization of general public on safe disposal methods.
Assist in general transportation of WASH and other sectors materials.
Assist Program or centralized fleet in driving duties.
Back up to support PHP team in materials distribution and sanitary needs assessment.
Monitoring
Maintaining tractor and machinery log.
Maintaining borehole logs for the 5 boreholes.
Track and update disposal record for onward reporting to supervisor.
Crosschecking borehole logs and dipping records.
Water supply and compound power operations
Support the PHE component through guidance from immediate supervisor.
Shall be called upon to offer towing services to PWJ vehicles and other UNHCR/agencies vehicles as part of emergency and recovery mission.
General Tasks
Bush clearing and grading of impassable roads within the Camps.
Backfilling of filled dumping sites at the refugee camps.
Collect wastes and carcasses for safer disposal.
General transport of materials and fragile items for WASH activities and other IPs.
Track and
update disposal records for prompt reporting.
Qualifications & Professional Experience
Valid driving license for class B, C, E, D and Kenya Secondary Education Certificate.
5 years hands-on experience in driving and operating tractors engaged to turntable drawbar trailers.
Fully conversant with operating a tractor with front loader and plough.
Broad experience in skip loading and operating tipping machineries.
Ability to multi-task and operate both pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
Knowledge on basic mechanical operating systems (Diff lock, 4Wd engagement etc.).
Other Knowledge, Additional Competences
Ability to safely and competently use heavy equipment machinery.
Proven work experience as a Heavy Machine Operator.
Ability to work for long hours, and has extensive knowledge of Camp terrain and routing patterns.
Reliable, honest and has good organizational skills.
Commitment to and understanding of PWJ Vision, Mission and Values.
Sensitivity in handling and disposing of documents which may be important.
