PATH Research Associate - Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Jobs in Ethiopia
Job Description Please include a cover letter with your resume describing your interest and how you meet the qualifications.
PATH is an international organization that drives transformative innovation to save lives and improve health, especially among women and children. We accelerate innovation across five platforms—vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, devices, and system and service innovations—that harness our entrepreneurial insight, scientific and public health expertise, and passion for health equity. By mobilizing partners around the world, we take innovation to scale, working alongside countries primarily in Africa and Asia to tackle their greatest health needs. Together, we deliver measurable results that disrupt the cycle of poor health.
The Centre for Malaria Control and Elimination (CMCE) brings together all the programs and departments working on malaria within PATH, from the Malaria Control and Evaluation Partnership in Africa (MACEPA), to programs working on vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, and novel interventions. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on both the MACEPA and the malaria diagnostics projects. We are seeking a quantitative researcher that can work flexibly between both teams to support various data analysis projects.
MACEPA
MACEPA supports National Malaria Control programs in Africa to apply a package of malaria interventions to a high proportion of the population and to document the health and economic benefits that result. A key component of this work is to educate policymakers about the tools and approaches that can be adapted and shared between and across countries to achieve elimination of the disease, and to secure the resources necessary to do so.
Diagnostics
One of PATH’s primary activities is the development and commercialization of health and medical products for developing country use. Additionally, PATH’s product teams conduct collaborative research and development with universities, manufacturers, and other institutions to develop products that are appropriate and affordable for developing country use.
PATH's goal in these collaborations is to achieve maximum sustainable public health benefit by facilitating global technology access. The Diagnostics (Dx) Program focuses on development of affordable, portable, easy-to-use diagnostics with a user-oriented perspective that focuses on the needs of the people.
The Dx program supports the CMCE goals
through ensuring the availability of quality diagnostic tests to support malaria case management, control and elimination.
Specific responsibilities include:
Conducting statistical analyses to answer key malaria questions. This will include evaluations of programmatic malaria interventions, designing research studies, developing analysis protocols, analyzing the performance of novel malaria diagnostics
Taking a lead role in writing scientific publications and reports to disseminate findings to the global malaria community and funders
Developing analytics tools and dashboards to support decision making within MACEPA, Diagnostics, and national malaria control programs
Developing robust R pipelines to clean, organize, process and consolidate a wide range of datasets
Create high quality data visualizations and maps to support program objectives
Validation techniques for diagnostics and statistical process control of lab data
Presenting results of research to stakeholders including national malaria control programs and ministries of health, the scientific community, and donors.
Conduct costing exercises to estimate the cost per person and cost drivers of different malaria interventions.
Developing training materials and delivering tutorials to support training of in-country staff in data analysis skills
Required Experience
Masters in public health, epidemiology, health-related data science or similar field preferred, plus a minimum of one year of experience applying data science to real world problems or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in data management, conducting statistical analysis and writing reproduceable code in R
Strong quantitative background with understanding of research methods and epidemiology
Experience working with epidemiological, national surveillance or clinical data
In-depth knowledge of statistics – ideally regression, spatial statistics, sample size calculation, Bayesian statistics, time series analysis
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new analysis and coding skills and understand new topics in epidemiology or global health
Demonstrated oral and written communications skills, including report/paper writing and editing.
Excellent organization, time management, attention to detail, ability to appropriately prioritize competing tasks, manage shifting priorities, and meet deadlines.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and as part of a cross-disciplinary team.
Ability to interact with global colleagues and partners and provide creative solutions in a professional manner.
