PATH Health Economist - Medical Devices and Health Technologies Jobs in Uganda

Job Description

  • PATH is a global organization that works to accelerate health equity by bringing together public institutions, businesses, social enterprises, and investors to solve the world’s most pressing health challenges. We accelerate innovation across five platforms-vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, devices, and system and service innovations-that harness our entrepreneurial insight, scientific and public health expertise, and passion for health equity. With expertise in science, health, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales solutions—including vaccines, drugs, devices, diagnostics, and innovative approaches to strengthening health systems worldwide.

  • PATH is currently recruiting for a Health Economist with experience in the design and performance of economic evaluations of health care interventions. The Health Economist will work in the Medical Devices and Health Technologies (MDHT) program to advance PATH’s global work to ensure that technologies reach those in low- and middle-income countries who need them most. The MDHT program at PATH develops, advances, and facilitates the commercialization of health technologies for low-resource settings. The Health Economist will support multiple project teams within the MDHT program and across the organization. Project teams are multidisciplinary and generally include members with technical/scientific, public health, communications, business/commercialization, and administrative support expertise.

  • The ideal candidate will apply their skills to a range of operational and research projects, including the economic evaluations and development of tools to advance the evidence base on the economic costs and benefits of new technologies applied to diverse health areas. The analytical work primarily requires the performance of costing and cost-effectiveness analysis using decision-analytic modeling. Disease modeling and statistical applications may also be employed. This role also requires the health economist to work in interdisciplinary teams, collaborate and manage contracts with partner organizations, and engage with policymakers at the global and country-level as well as relevant health personnel. The overarching role of the health economist is to generate and translate economic evidence to inform the country and global-level decision making. We envision the successful candidate being based in one of PATH’s Africa offices and will work with and report to a USA-based health economist who has strong experience working in low- and middle-income countries.

    Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct economic analyses for public health interventions or specific health technologies, including:

  • Studies to collect primary data on the costs of health programs or implementing specific health care interventions.

  • Cost-effectiveness and health impact modeling of devices, vaccines, medications, and
    diagnostics.

  • Budget and impact modeling.

  • Lead and participate in report writing, developing presentations, and publication of results and findings in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Work independently as well as collaborate with other health economists, interdisciplinary teams, and international partners, to design and conduct economic analyses.

  • Work with teams to interpret and communicate the results of the analyses to relevant stakeholders.

  • Provide input and guidance to teams on methods and modeling approaches that can be employed to ensure understanding of the underlying value of an intervention/technology, compared to the status quo or alternative

  • Contribute to the development and writing of proposals for new projects.

  • Work with partner organizations, including managing contracts and deliverables to meet project needs.

  • Represent PATH at international, regional, and national meetings, and, where appropriate, present findings from research and analyses.

  • Engage with multiple stakeholders and partners to achieve project goals.

    Required Experience

  • An advanced degree with a preference for a Ph.D. in economics, health economics, or related field.

  • Understanding and work experience focused on low- and middle-income country health programs.

  • Experience conducting economic evaluations of health care interventions in low- and middle-income countries.

  • Experience with primary data collection for costing studies of health care programs.

  • Desire to work in one of PATH’s Africa offices, with a preference for Uganda or Senegal.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with colleagues across time zones.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research methods and results in publishable manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

  • Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary colleagues to achieve team goals.

  • Experience in building health economic models using software such as Excel and TreeAge and conducting sensitivity analysis using software such as @Risk, or similar type software.
