  • In the last several years, remarkable progress has been made in fighting Malaria worldwide. Advancements in prevention and treatment have resulted in marked reductions in illness and death. Eliminating malaria is achievable using existing tools and a focused strategy, and the Malaria Control and Elimination Partnership in Africa (MACEPA), a program at PATH, is working with its national partners to plan the forward through the development of an evidence-based framework to guide countries through a comprehensive set of program interventions to elimination. As part of PATH MACEPA’s support to the Government of Zambia’s Ministry of Health for malaria control and elimination activities, we are seeking an entomologist and a program officer to assist with the roll out and management of the Attractive Targeted Sugar Bait (ATSB) project in Kaoma, Nkeyema and Luampa districts of Western Province Zambia.

  • PATH is currently recruiting for an Entomologist to provide technical assistance to the ATSB Project, especially in study design of the entomological component, setting up and maintenance of a field laboratory, training of staff, coordination and supervision of entomological activities in all project sites, conducting special entomological experiments, following stringent study protocols, laboratory processing of mosquitoes, management and analysis of entomological data as well as developing scientific reports. .

    Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Contribute to overall planning and development of project protocols in relation to entomological studies.

    • Develop standard operating procedures, data collection tools and databases for the entomological component of the project.

    • Understand, strictly adhere to and enforce scientific rigor for high
    quality research among field teams

    • Develop list of equipment and supplies required for the entomological component of the study and prepare purchase requisition documents.

    • Train field entomology staff in mosquito collection, identification, preservation, and storage

    • Coordinate and supervise entomological activities during regular surveys to ensure high quality standards.

    • Help in setting up and maintaining a field laboratory at Kaoma ATSB field station, including an insectary as necessary and oversee the appropriate maintenance and functions of the laboratory.

    • Coordinate species identification, infection rate determination, blood meal identification and others as required.

    • Prepare regular progress reports on entomological activities.

    • Carry out analyses of entomological data in relation to other entomological data and develop scientific reports.

    Required Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree (minimum), Master’s degree (desirable), in medical or general entomology.

    • At least 3-4 years of field research experience in malaria entomology.

    • Adequate understanding of malaria entomology.

    • Advanced skills in laboratory processing of anopheline mosquitoes, including species identification using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, infection rate determination and blood meal analysis.

    • Insectary maintenance skills.

    • Good management and planning skills of project tasks.

    • Produces high quality work in a timely and cost-effective manner.

    • Excellent organizational, interpersonal communication and computer skills.

    • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Skills in the use of Microsoft Office packages especially Excel and Access.

    • Skills in the use of statistical software, especially R.

    • Experience in teaching of malaria entomology field and laboratory techniques.

    • Experience in regulatory and operational aspects of vector control methods and management.

    • Demonstrate ability to work with minimal direction and supervision.

    • Demonstrate ability to work as a member of a team with the ability to accept inputs of other team members.

    • Must have legal authorization to work in Zambia.
