PROACT project takes pride in reaching out and touching the lives of over 45,000 beneficiary households within both state of intervention, households who have at one point or the other benefited from the various spread of the PROACT intervention components now have stories to share in appreciate and testimony to the impact of the project in transforming their lives.
Human angle stories from community partners reflects the contribution of the all combined efforts from the Project donors and Partners to uplifting rural communities households out of poverty and hopelessness, restoring their self-dignity and building a sustainable resilience against shocks and hunger.
Justfication
The project have featured different perspectives and testimonies from different beneficiaries over the year, but the repository of human angle success stories still evolves within the some project components and few beneficiaries.
Hence the need to strategically plan for a more robust success story gathering exercise to developing a 10% beneficiary success story bank for Donor usage, program quality, accountability and documentation and enhance project visibility to learning and understanding how change happens in the lives of over 40,000 household with a period of 4years.
The Village Savings and Loan Association group creation which is the financial inclusion strategy and a viable empowerment component of the PROACT Project have evidently transformed the lives of our poor rural households to a better off and wealth household with increased assets, income and means of livelihood and therefore stories from participants of these components are expected to serve as advocacy instruments for the project to engage the various levels Governments for sustainability and replication at scale.
Project Beneficiaries stories, especially the VSLA changes day by day as the PROACT Project interventions continues to target the very poor and poor wealth ranking categories and there is a need to update these stories to represent the current situations within focal communities.
An example of “A beneficiary from song local government, Za’a Community Mrs Sufinatu Ibrahim who initially benefited from the food loan program which allowed her feed her family during the lean season then, but now her story move very fast in uniqueness and transformation as she now processes rice using the loan she obtained from her VLSA, the rice production value chain has yielded more income as she now support her family and specially paying her Husband’s tuition fee at the Federal University Yola while that both have a shifting plans for her to start her schooling after the Husband graduation, who would then continue the family business. This justifies the need to revalidate, update and document the transformative changes around the project communities targeting at least 10 percent of PROACT total beneficiaries in both State of intervention towards promoting the goodwill of the implementers and also serve as evidence for learning and to pursue more funding opportunities for Oxfam and partners.
Relevence
This activity is geared towards achieving and amplifying the achievements from all PROACT specific Objectives which are as follows;
Rapid improvement in livelihoods, food security and early recovery for targeted vulnerable farmers and host communities including women and youth in Adamawa and Kebbi States;
Strengthened resilience, preparedness towards risks and natural resource utilization for targeted vulnerable small holder farming communities in Adamawa and Kebbi States.
Improved strategic linkages for food security and nutrition, and support to local market systems in each State.
Improved response capacity of government towards social protection, early warning systems and strengthened local frameworks towards resilience building.
The activity would particularly profile a success story bank for the VSLA intervention and also gather other successes per the project specific outcomes as stated in the Log-frame.
The Success Story Gathering Week Objectives And Its Methodologies.
The objectives of these activities are simply to create a repository of evident human angle stories that reflect every set outcomes and outcome indicators of the project, to better enrich the project reporting, visibility and policy advocacies.
The activity would be conducted for a
full working week simultaneously in both State intervention with active support from partners and Oxfam program units State in-state and Country office representatives from the IPE unit.
Teams would be formed per LGAs using the outcome indicators with key target questions to ask different contributors towards drafting a well-crafted human angle story that reflects;
What was (Past),
What is (Present),
What was the value addition in terms of components he/she benefited from
What sustainability looks like for the household after the project departure.
Other opportunities and/or perhaps gaps identified during the interviews that may need the project support in terms of capacity enhancement or rather more re-orientation of communities as the case may be. (See tools)
All Stories gathered during these exercises would all be reviewed, documented and produced in what is called “PROACT SUCCESS STORY Catalogue” a publication which would serve as advocacy and knowledge management materials.
Community partners Stories would also be coded and added as a plug-in encrypted to each beneficiaries number tag identify on the MiS and Oxfamdata.org platform.
The Success Story gathering week would also feature the “PROACT Story so far” documentary filming in both States of intervention, across selected Local governments and Communities. (See Table below for timelines).
Expectations of the Editor
The Editor will be dedicated to editorially review over 200 success story drafts in a manner that reflects the actual realities and connect with an human angle perspective.
Ensure right placements of these stories in pictures and more importantly in line with the Project specific objectives and its indicators as captured in a catalogue format.
Prepare, review and edit copy to improve readability and understanding, or supervise others any other support team in the editorial processes.
Carefully read copy or proof to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, syntax and any other details of concern in the assigned draft project reports and researches.
Professionally allocate print space for story text and photos according to space limits and copy significance, using knowledge of layout principles and guidelines.
Re-edit stories of changes as appropriate and use content ideas
Plan the contents of publications according to the publication's style, communication and editorial policy, and publishing requirements of Oxfam in Nigeria as provided.
Work closely with Oxfam team to seek clarifications and inputs were needed.
Share final soft copies of aligned ready to print publication using Box or google drive to Oxfam contact person, final copies must be such that can be uploaded on Oxfam’s website
Ensure compliance to all supply policies and also ensure all signed documents (Quotations, Payment request and Invoices) are duly signed.
Requirements of the Consultant
The Editor would review both PROACT States stories and work closely with the project team in understanding the flow of the draft.
The consultant must have multi-disciplinary expertise with a proven years of experience and expertise in Storytelling, editorial and/or copy reading.
Advanced degree/MSc degree in Journalism, English Language, Mass Communication or other related fields.
A demonstrated track record of carrying out similar type of exercise.
