Gender and Knowledge Management Adviser
Team PurposeAdvancing Gender Justice is one of Oxfam’s six strategic external Change Goals. The Gender Justice team works across the Oxfam confederation, and with partners and allies, to design and deliver Oxfam’s Gender Justice work in alliance with feminist and women’s rights organisations across the world to help them to do this.
The team leads, catalyzes, inspires and coordinates Gender Justice work across the Oxfam confederation, and builds synergy in gender justice work across long term development, humanitarian, and advocacy and campaigns. The Gender Justice team will support the internal cultural, leadership and other changes needed, including working closely with the Safeguarding team to ensure that Oxfam is able to deliver against its ambitions, in particular to rebuild trust and to re-orientate itself within the sector in the wake of the crisis around safeguarding.
Job Purpose – Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Strategic Leadership:
Provide vision and strategic leadership to Oxfam’s work on Gender Justice and Women’s Rights.
Collaborate with and inspire staff across the confederation to make gender justice central to all their work.
Advise senior leaders on how to enhance Oxfam’s capability and commitment to deliver on putting women’s rights at the heart of all they do.
Work with key staff to ensure alignment and synergy between Oxfam’s long-term development, humanitarian and influencing initiatives on Gender Justice.
Ensure that women’s rights are at the heart of all they do internally, that staff capacity and leadership is built on gender integration in program quality and knowledge management, and in advocacy, campaigns and influencing, funding and fundraising.
Contribute to positive changes in attitudes and beliefs on gender in Oxfam’s organizational culture.
Support the understanding and embedding of feminist leadership principles across Oxfam.
Provide advice and gender justice policy sign off on positions and products in line with OI Gender Justice priorities, policy and program frameworks to campaigns, advocacy offices and affiliates.
People/Stakeholders and Management:
Manage OI Secretariat Gender Justice staff through direct and matrix management arrangements, and hold Oxfam affiliate Gender Justice Leads accountable for delivery on shared objectives.
Provide advice and support to the Executive Board Gender Justice Steering Committee, made up of Executive Directors of the different Oxfam affiliates.
Chair the GJ Platform, an advisory board to the Steering Committee made up of representatives from different affiliates and coordinate its work, ensuring appropriate communications and workflow between the Steering Committee and the GJ Platform work.
Provide leadership to the development and implementation of Oxfam’s Strategic and Operational Plan for Gender Justice, and to the reporting and accountability relationship with Confederation governance.
External liaison, accountability and alliance-building:
Ensure alliance building strategies and coordination are in place for all of Oxfam’s global work
on Gender Justice and Women’s Rights.
Work with others to strengthen their links and accountability to external women’s rights and gender justice organizations and groups.
Ensure that Oxfam has appropriate strategies, resource allocations, teams and risk management plans for priority global events on Gender Justice and Women’s Rights.
Provide advice and support to Oxfam International’s Executive Director on policy positions; prepare talking points and draft speeches as required.
Fundraising:
Working with others in the team, ensure that strong proposals on Gender Justice and Women’s Rights are produced and that all funding proposals include strong gender justice integration.
Contribute to Oxfam affiliate and OI Secretariat fundraising to raise both unrestricted and restricted funds for Gender Justice and women’s rights.

Provides consistent support to the Executive Board Gender Justice Committee.
Dotted line reports include: Gender Justice Change Goal Lead (or successor post), Gender and Organisational Development Adviser, Gender and Humanitarian Adviser, Head of the Enough! EVAWG Campaign, Gender Equality Advisers – Campaigns; Associate Director, Safeguarding and Culture.

Technical Skills, Experience & Knowledge
Essential:
In depth understanding and knowledge of women’s rights issues, sector and networks, and proven ability to scan and analyse trends in the context and to adjust strategic intent accordingly.
Proven leadership ability at a senior, strategic level in a complex dispersed organisation. Strong leadership skills including the ability to provide vision and direction without line management authority, to ensure delivery on strategy and to influence and engage positively with the corporate direction.
Strong negotiation and team building skills and ability to work effectively with others to advance a shared agenda on gender justice and women’s rights.
Exceptionally high collaboration skills and a participatory and empowering leadership style with the ability to operate in a complex environment of change, comfortable with navigating overlapping roles and responsibilities and bringing stakeholders together, inspiring and influencing across departments and functions.
Strong people management skills, including in complex matrix environments.
Cross divisional experience working on gender justice and women’s rights in development, and/or humanitarian work, policy and campaigns and organizational development and capacity building in a multi-cultural, multi-stakeholder context.
Fluency in spoken and written English.
Ability to travel away from home for up to two months total per year.
Desirable:
Competence in French and/or Spanish preferred.
