This internship position is located in the Inspection and Evaluation Division (IED), Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS). OIOS-IED conducts independent inspections and evaluations on behalf of the Secretary-General and Member States and in accordance with its mandate (A/RES/48/218 B). OIOS-IED's objective is "To strengthen accountability, learning, efficiency, effectiveness and impact in the implementation of programmes and the relevance of administrative procedures and to assess whether the activities correspond to the mandates."

Evaluations assess the relevance, efficiency and effectiveness of the Organization’s programmes in relation to their objectives and mandates. OIOS-IED is seeking post-secondary students who wish to gain professional experience in an international organization to supplement their studies. The internship provides practical educational experience working in a multicultural and intergovernmental organization.

Under the supervision of OIOS-IED managers, the intern is assigned projects and tasks that are relevant to their educational background and interests and provide them with the opportunity to apply and further develop their theoretical knowledge. Under the overall supervision and guidance of the relevant manager, the intern will be expected to work on one or more of the Division’s evaluations of UN peacekeeping operations, including: United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), and United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

The internship will be full-time and can be conducted either remotely or in-person in Entebbe, Uganda. The intern will be expected to be available during the Entebbe office hours. The internship will commence between July and September 2024 for a minimum duration of three months, with the possibility of extension up to six months, depending on performance and need.

Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Entebbe Peacekeeping Evaluation Section and an evaluation team leader, the intern provides assistance with systematic evidence synthesis on the impact of a United Nations peacekeeping operation. This includes tasks related to data collection, analysis, and other duties. The intern will have the opportunity to gain exposure to the areas of peacekeeping, peacebuilding and programme evaluation in conflict and post-conflict settings. Depending on the competencies and interests of the intern, the assignments will include:

  • Assist in refining and piloting a search protocol for screening databases including the United Nations Digital Library to select relevant publications, reports and documents published by
    the United Nations bodies on the subject matter,

  • Extract, file, and organize through a bibliography based on inclusion criteria of select documents, systematic reviews, and other literature,

  • Assist in reviewing, mapping, and analyzing mixed evidence contained in screened documents based on a matrix using computerized tools such as Microsoft Excel, PowerBI, NVivo, Qualtrics, and Artificial Intelligence,

  • Summarize trends, divergences, and evidence-gaps,

  • Visualize findings where necessary using Microsoft Excel, PowerBI, NVivo and other computerized tools,

  • Take notes during meetings and/or data collection activities such as interviews or focus groups,

  • Assist in other ad-hoc activities including attendance in evaluand, section and division meetings, as needed.

    Qualifications/special skills

    To qualify for an internship through the United Nations Entebbe Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

  • Be registered for or have completed studies in political science, economics, international affairs, security and counter-terrorism studies, public administration, gender studies, statistics, data science, human rights, programme evaluation and/or related fields. Skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis using large unstructured volumes of data are desired.

  • Be computer literate in standard and advanced software applications, preferably including Microsoft Excel; familiarity with data analysis software such as PowerBI, NVivo, R, SPSS, Stata, and/or ethical Artificial Intelligence tools.

  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of its Charter.

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
