Job DescriptionNutrition International (NI), a non-profit agency dedicated to eliminating vitamin and mineral deficiencies worldwide, invites proposals from competent agencies to implement a rapid survey in Ethiopia.
Nutrition International is an Ottawa-based, international not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that the world's most vulnerable especially women and children in developing countries get the vitamins and minerals they need to survive and thrive.
Supported by the Global Affairs Canada (Government of Canada) and other generous donors, in Ethiopia, NI is working alongside the Ministry of Health to address the challenge of malnutrition.
NI’s programs inform government policy and national health guidelines that make vitamin and mineral supplementation programs increasingly effective and inclusive.
In addition to ongoing program on Vitamin A supplementation and salt iodization, NI is promoting the use of zinc and ORS for childhood diarrhea management in Amhara, Oromia, SNNP, and Tigray. NI is also working alongside the Ministry of Health to strengthen nutrition programs for vulnerable women, adolescent girls and young children through Right Start.
Right Start, is an initiative being implemented in Afar, Amhara, Beneshangul Gumuze, Oromia, SNNP and Tigray, regions.
Background
The 2016 Ethiopian micronutrient survey showed that deficiency of several micronutrients, including that of zinc, iodine, vitamin A, folate and vitamin B12, is of public health concern as per WHO classification.
Deficiencies in these essential micronutrients can have devastating health consequences ranging from serious physical and cognitive disabilities to life-threatening disorders.
These adverse effects go hand in hand with low productivity and net economic losses.
Job Requirements
The assignment is for a team of two that is led by a local expert that is well versed with Monitoring and Evaluation work and an international technical advisor that has a specific experience and knowledge on food fortification monitoring and evaluation.
NI will recruit the international expert through other advertisement while this ToR
is intended to hire the lead consultant in country. The lead consultant shall have the following qualifications.
Post-graduate level qualification in Statistics/ Monitoring and Evaluation/ Economics/Demography/ any other related field(s).
Qualification in Nutrition and public health will be an advantage.
It is an asset if she/he has at least had seven years of proven experience in:
Conducting research and consultancy work on monitoring and evaluation and various food industry related projects and programs
Has previous experience and engagement with Food Fortification and Universal salt Iodization program
Language Skills:
She/he should be fluent in English.
Experience required
At least ten year experience in monitoring and evaluation, particularly in the context of nutrition and/or health programs.
She/he should have a minimum of ten years experience of working with government agencies
and of working in development projects.
Knowledge of and experienced in project cycle management and well versed in logical frameworks.
Minimum of five years experience in nutrition programming both in government and NGO with emphasis on working in area with food fortification program management, programs planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation are preferred.
Sound knowledge on Ethiopian National Nutrition Strategy, the National Nutrition Program, micronutrient intervention strategies, and food fortification initiatives
Background in the following technical areas: micronutrient prevention and control strategies, nutrition assessment, survey, program evaluation and researches; and public- private partnership.
Proven experience in working with micronutrient interventions projects and more specifically with food fortification initiatives.
