Role and responsibilitiesThe purpose of the position is to support and assist in the day-to-day implementation of protection activities in designated areas. The Protection Officer will coordinate and work closely with the Protection Coordinator in leading the protection activities in Bor South County.
Under the direct supervision of the Protection Coordinator, the Protection officer will ensure that activities are implemented in non-discriminatory ways that promote access to services for all; the safety and dignity of the people accessing protection services in strict adherence to protection principles and minimum standards on inclusion of age, gender and diversity.
Furthermore, the Protection Officer will contribute to the systematic integration of the needs of women, men, girls, boys, people with disabilities, elderly persons, and other persons with specific needs throughout the project cycle.

Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines.
Assist implementation of the protection portfolio according to plan of action.
Implement independently protection monitoring related activities as delegated.
Responsible for organizing and delivery of tasks in line with established procedures, agreed priorities, international standards, and relevant guiding principles.
Coordinate and conduct protection monitoring in the designated areas, and report timely about identified concerns and risks that beneficiaries face, in accordance with principles, established tools and mechanisms.
Develop and maintain knowledge of protection, in order to be most effective in supporting the team.
Prepare and develop status reports as required by management.
Ensure confidentiality and proper filing of relevant documents.
Ensure that protection monitoring reports reflect issues faced and raised by all (diverse) community members, as well as are representative of the situation on the ground.
Promote and share ideas for technical improvement.
Specific responsibilities
Participates and supports in the design, planning, implementation, and monitoring of Protection activities in designated area(s).
Work with women, men, girls, and boys in the community to identify their needs, interests, and priorities, and where possible, adapt activities that are culturally appropriate and meet the needs of target population.
Work in collaboration with the other members of the Protection team to undertake protection monitoring activities (Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussion, Direct Observation) as well as community-based protection initiatives.
Build and maintain trust relationships with target communities.
Contribute to the identification and internal referral of individuals/households with specific needs and/or vulnerabilities, with special focus on children, youth, women, and other at-risk groups.
Coordinate the team of protection monitoring technical assistants and provide guidance while conducting community-level protection monitoring activities to identify and document critical and emerging threats to the safety, dignity, and well-being of women, men, girls, and boys, as well as protective factors and community resources.
Raise awareness on key protection-related issues among target population and communities, as well as key external stakeholders, in close collaboration with concerned technical Teams and specialized actors. If relevant, provide target population and communities with information and orientation about existing services and how to access them.
Support development and help organize training
on community-based protection to target population and community members/groups and prepare training materials and training reports.
Ensure that all data and information pertaining to protection monitoring are handled in strict confidence, and in line with applicable data protection and information-sharing protocols.
Compile information collected by team members and prepare periodic protection reports, and attend meetings as required.
When assessments, studies, and research are carried out in the field locations, coordinate and manage the team of Protection assistants to carry out relevant activities.
Ensure daily operation of the community centre and lead in the direct implementation of day-to-day activities in the center
Assist the field team with implementation and monitoring of the following field activities: protection monitoring (HHs level protection monitoring and conduction of FGDs) and Cash Assistance/IPA (Individual Protection Assistance), in addition to actor mapping and development of referral pathways
Provide inputs on case studies, best practices, and lessons learned from implemented activities.
Ensure target population and community are protected from sexual exploitation and abuse, and community based response mechanism are functional.

Generic professional competencies for this position:
Diploma or University Degree relevant to law, statistics, social sciences, or related field
At least 3 years of proven protection experience in humanitarian settings
Excellent analysis and report-writing skills
Strong organization skills
Proven experience in training, including development of training materials
Ability to quickly develop good insight and understanding of the context, human rights situation, and the political environment of the program country
Above average computer literacy
Context-related skills, knowledge, and experience (shall be adapted to the specific position):
Knowledge of the context
Knowledge of Juba Arabic and other local languages an advantage
Excellent writing, analytical and strategic thinking skill, with proven ability to create and utilize qualitative and quantitative analyses
Effective verbal and written communication, multi-tasking, organizational, and prioritization skills are necessary
Ability to navigate complex situations with diplomacy
Confident and decisive leadership
Desire and ability to learn and grow, both personally and professionally
Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members is required
Demonstrated experience and ability to professionally and appropriately represent the organization and negotiate and defend NRC’s interests with a diverse range of government officials, local organizations and other groups
Proven skills and experience in report writing
Strong organizational and logistical skills and the ability to work with little infrastructure and to function in difficult situations including limited transport options
