What we are looking for:

The Humanitarian and Conflict Analyst through best to date data and lessons learnt provides contextualised holistic analysis of the context and projections as well as scenarios to NRC and the wider humanitarian community and other relevant stakeholders.

The post holder synthesizes, interprets, and puts the evidence and selective information with strategic value into perspective in a way NRC and other humanitarian actors can take informed programme and strategic decisions.

With great focus on the grass root level developments and their national level implication and vice-versa, the post holder informs operational planning and decision-making, and supports key humanitarian policy and advocacy efforts. The position is also fully responsible to manage the portfolio of the activities and maintain strong donor relationship.

In addition, the function is expected to contribute and lead to fundraising efforts for the role and other relevant NRC work in South Sudan.

What you will do:

Key objectives for this role include:

  • Conduct context analysis of the conflict and humanitarian dynamics with a view to support humanitarian strategic and operational decision-making in key humanitarian fora (Protection Cluster, ICWG, HCT, etc.), donors and the diplomatic community.

  • Provide advice on conflict and humanitarian dynamics, including humanitarian access, humanitarian policy and advocacy efforts in key humanitarian fora.

  • Provide guidance to the Country Management Group (CMG) in making informed decisions related to humanitarian access and the practical application of humanitarian principles.

  • Represent NRC in relevant coordination fora, including humanitarian access, operational working groups and liaise with key stakeholders including national authorities and donors as required.

  • Offer advice on conflict-sensitive approaches to humanitarian assistance.

    Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide contextual analysis to the CMG, interagency and international community through relevant reporting mechanisms such as briefings and meetings, bi-weekly briefing papers, mapping and quarterly reports, including monitoring the humanitarian situation,
    access and protection concerns, as well as emerging trends and displacement patterns

  • Provide in depth holistic analysis, trends, and scenarios of national, sub national and other relevant conflicts and advice on approaches to integrate conflict dynamics into programme design.

  • Provides analysis of relevant humanitarian policies and put in the perspective of overall humanitarian and conflict frameworks.

  • Ensure capacity building of staff in areas related to humanitarian access (humanitarian principles & negotiation).

  • Oversee the development and implementation of South Sudan Access Strategy.

    What you will bring

    Generic professional competencies:

  • Postgraduate degree in international law, International Relations, Conflict Studies, social sciences, or related field

  • Minimum of 3-5 years good experience working on conflict or political analysis, or on humanitarian advocacy

  • Experience from working in complex and volatile contexts

  • Documented experience with research and the production of written materials – such as reports, briefing notes, position papers, talking points, etc.

  • Documented experience with humanitarian operations, protection, humanitarian space and access, or conflict sensitive approaches

  • Confident communicator, with experience in giving briefings and presentations.

  • Strong inter-personal skills, working well both in teams and independently

  • Able to work under pressure and good at timely decision making

  • Self-motivated and excellent observer of protection issues

  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal.
