The Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is a non-profit umbrella organization that supports 35 member Community Conservancies across northern and coastal Kenya with fundraising, technical support, governance support and training to member community conservancies.

Its mission is to develop resilient community owned conservancies that transform lives, secure peace and conserve natural resources.

Purpose of the Position:

  • The NRT is committed to partnering with community conservancies to reverse range land degradation.
  • Through strengthened community rangeland management practices – informed by traditional
    knowledge and science – communities will build resilience to droughts.
  • These practices will also benefit
    livestock and wildlife; both critical to the livelihoods of pastoral communities.
  • The NRT is seeking to recruit a Senior Rangelands Officer.
  • He/she will report to the NRT Director of Natural Resources Management (NRM) by overseeing the implementation of the rangelands program.

    Key Responsibilities
  • Developing innovative and effective work-plans for the NRT and Conservancies range lands
    teams guided by the overall NRT strategy.
  • To develop and mentor community conservancy range lands coordinators; to assist them in
    developing and implementing effective work plans guided by community conservancy specific
    management plans.
  • Oversee and manage the implementation of rangelands work-plans through regular field visits and community conservancy Board / Manager level community engagements, as required.
  • Integrate all rangelands program activity with the Director of Programs, Regional Directors and in concert with other technical goal leads.
  • Monitoring the performance of the range lands program team and follow up with regular
    performance-based appraisals (HR management).
  • Overseeing the monitoring and evaluation of the entire range lands program working closely
    with the NRT ME&L Manager.
  • In support of the NRM Director - understand and execute expenditure of the range lands
    program budget through the respective community conservancies.
  • Regular communication and follow-up with respective community conservancy management
    units.
  • Overseeing all internal and external training on range lands matters including running a syllabus for the community conservancy ‘Leadership and management’ training program.
  • To include capturing and capacity building ‘best practice’ range lands; rehabilitation, awareness and management at all levels.
  • Contribute to the national debate and understanding on how community conservancies is
    influencing range lands focused behavior change in the ASAL’s in the north – aimed at building
    resilience.
  • Initiate and maintain a national and regional network of contacts to leverage community experience and learning in the field of range lands
    management.
  • Report writing.
  • Representing NRT at conferences / other engagements
  • Support the NRT Communications Director with range lands reporting and product to enrich the single narrative of the NRT holistic approach.
  • Implementation of community conservancies vegetation monitoring tools to help inform
    community decision making.
  • This is a practical, field-based role which will require time spent camping in the field as well as at NRT HQ advising the Director of NRM and CEO on the implementation of community range lands objectives and how this impact relates to the strategic achievement of the NRT mission.
  • The individual needs to have confidence in speaking to rural communities of multiple tribes and cultures and must have exceptional
    leadership skills to guide the NRT range lands team.
  • The individual should have a thorough understanding of pastoral systems and experience working within the ASALs of Kenya.
  • Fluency in Kiswahili and English is
    essential (on paper and in dialogue).
  • A passion for transformation community-based conservation is vital.

    Qualifications: Education /Knowledge/ Skills and Experience
  • Master degree in Range Management or natural resources management or other related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional work experience in community manage natural resources approaches.
  • Proficient and experienced in planning, monitoring and reporting of project activities in relevant field in multi-stakeholder partnerships and collaborations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking, communication, negotiation and facilitation skills.
  • Experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating respect for, and understanding of, cultural differences.
  • Ability to work in challenging environments and deliver on tight deadlines.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Adaptable and flexibly resilience to respond to changes.
