Purpose:

  • The Senior lecturer / Ass Prof in Physiology will make significant contributions to the teaching and learning area of both undergraduate and postgraduate Physiology programs at the Potchefstroom Campus.

  • The staff member will teach Physiology theory and practice to Health and Natural Sciences students and assist in the supervision of post-graduate students of the honours, MHSc and PhD programs.

  • The Senior lecturer / Ass Prof in Physiology will also contribute to the research activities in the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART) on his/her/them interest in cardiovascular disease.

    Minimum Requirements...

  • Undergraduate qualification (BSc Hons with Physiology as major OR Equivalent Hons with Physiology as major.

  • Post Graduate qualification (PhD in Human Physiology OR an associated or relevant field (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology or Pharmacology)

  • Membership in the South African Heart Association/ Southern African Hypertension Society/ International Society of Hypertension/ Health professions Council of South Africa/ Other: Physiology Society of SA

    Responsibilities:

  • Teaching-learning including postgraduate supervision (Hons, MSc and PhD)

  • Advanced knowledge, skills and competencies in physiology and effective teaching-learning practices in the broader field of physiology.

  • Advanced skills to design, develop, evaluate and improve study guides and curricula as the need arises.

  • Demonstrating advanced lecturing and practical skills in physiology.

  • Conduct assessments (formal, informal, practical) on undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and give feedback to students.

  • Participation and leadership in teaching-learning development and innovation processes within the University boundaries.

  • Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels.

  • Communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff, and individuals internal and external to the University; and
    Any ad-hoc assignments given by line manager (school director), within the scope of practice.

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in teaching-learning.

  • Research and innovation activity

  • Purposefully develop own focused research expertise in physiology related teaching-learning or epidemiology/public health/interventional research relevant to the future of the Physiology department or Hypertension in Africa Research Team.

  • Identify or formulate research problems and researchable questions in the applicable field of interest.

  • Designing and conducting research projects, writing research reports and preparing applications for research funding.

  • Communicating research outcomes to experts through publishing in accredited refereed journals, scientific conferences, and to relevant lay audiences if possible.

  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research.

  • Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation.

  • Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels.

  • Leadership, management and service to the university

  • Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of faculty and subject group committees and working parties within the University.

  • Relates to administrative or representative responsibilities in, or on behalf of, the NWU. This normally include delegated administrative, marketing or planning work successfully undertaken in the University, relevant faculty, school or discipline, capacity building, mentoring, administrative or representative responsibilities discharged elsewhere in the University, including leadership or participation in academic or professional organisations, including relevant contributions to the wider community; and/or public
    representations on behalf of the University in an official or professional capacity, enhancement of the image of the University with inter alia prospective students, employers of graduates, professional bodies and the community.
    Social responsiveness

  • Maintaining involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through which physiological knowledge and skills are applied to consequential problems of cardiovascular and other NCDs in South Africa and the world beyond the University.

  • Communicating appropriately and effectively with internal and external (community) role players.

  • Embraces engaged scholarship involving academic staff, civic engagement involving students’ community service, and professional engagement involving staff using their professional expertise.

  • Execute activities by which discipline-based skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community.

    Job Specification...

  • Relevant active involvement and participation in teaching and learning including the following aspects (10 Years for Ass Professor and 5 years for Senior Lecturer):

  • Evaluative reflective narrative on teaching statements describing teaching philosophy, strategies and goals (ca. 1000 words);

  • effective participation in teaching;
    design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended);
    use of LMS/online platforms, teaching-learning technologies;

  • effective assessment practices;
    reflection on student feedback (quantitative and qualitative);

  • reflection and peer evaluation on depth of subject knowledge;

  • satisfactory student success rate(throughput);

  • conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning.

  • Participation in research activities and involvement with the research component of master’s and doctoral programmes (5 Years for Senior Lecturer and 10 years for Ass Professor).

  • Publication of conference proceedings and/or scientific papers (5 Years for Senior Lecturer and 10 years for Ass Professor).

  • Demonstrated involvement in school and faculty committees, contributions to advising students and recruitment activities (5 Years for Senior Lecturer and 10 years for Ass Professor).

  • Social responsiveness: Participation (as leader of the activities) in the following is recommended, but is not set as a minimum requirement:

  • Involvement in the broader community, e.g. through media comment, community education, etc.;

  • awards/prizes/grants that acknowledge service at any level; and
    academic citizenship such as participation to the benefit

  • A high level of professional and ethical conduct supported by a letter from any recent employers or referees.

    Essential competencies:

  • Clear evidence of strength in teaching and learning in a blended environment and research and innovation activity.

  • Knowledge, skills and practical experience in the field of Physiology with an interest in a suitable field of Human Physiology and or Teaching/Learning research

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with regard to the key performance areas.

  • Computer literacy in Windows MS Office, use of e-mail and internet as well as a program for statistical analysis of data.

  • Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.

  • Demonstrated ability of language skills to function optimally within the multi-lingual environment of the NWU.

  • Have excellent people and conflict resolution skills.

  • Can apply time management and work independently (on their own and without supervision).

  • Must be able to work well in a group.

  • Demonstration of initiative and leadership in research and teaching and learning should be evident.

  • The ability to maintain effective and constructive interpersonal relationships, as well as to motivate and persuade others to be effective, efficient, achieve agreed goals timely, behave harmoniously and become or remain interdependent.

  • A clear vision, effective, clear and timely two-way communication, a strong results and people orientation, instilling trust, driving diversity, transformation and ethics and managing conflict proactively.
