Natural Justice Research Officer - Kenya Jobs

Key roles and Responsibilities


Research

  • Conduct research and write opinions on core programme issues, including land rights, climate change, environmental compliance, impacts of major projects and citizens advocacy
  • Provide background research for programme legal team on different environmental justice projects
  • Organize surveys and conduct interviews related to program activities
  • Collect and interpret data on legal compliance from the legal and paralegal teams and, with programme teams, generate actionable insights to improve policy, law and their implementation
  • Develop and manage excel database of legal compliance
  • Stay abreast and inform Natural Justice colleagues of published research, new events, and trends in academic studies, blogs, and media related to Natural Justice programmes and programme activities
  • Collect and conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
  • Develop and apply research methodologies and support programme teams on research good practice
  • Ensuring research activities are compliant with ethical standards


    Project and Knowledge Management


  • Organize all relevant project activities, including developing project plans, timelines and monitoring and evaluation
  • Manage the monitoring and evaluation of the programmes in Kenya
  • Utilize and improve Natural Justice knowledge management systems


    Communications


  • Write reports on topics of strategic importance to Natural Justice
  • Work with the programme team to write evidence-based blog articles, mainstream media submissions, publications and research reports
  • Share and present the findings of research at meetings relevant to the programmatic strategies of Natural Justice
  • Developing creative presentations of research findings


    Program Support


  • Contribute to Natural Justice programme activities by recognizing research problems, identifying opportunities and needs through a deep understanding of environmental justice dynamics in Kenya
  • Provide evidence-based input on the orientation and prioritization of programme activities
  • Carry out stakeholder and partner mapping tasks relevant to Natural Justice programmes in Kenya
  • Provide strategic analysis of trends in environmental justice, including in legal empowerment
  • Source and supply data for Natural Justice publications, legal comments, advice and submissions


    Qualifications and experience:


  • Master’s Degree in law, political science, economics (cooperation and human development), environmental studies, or other relevant social science discipline
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in research and data analysis
  • Experience translating research data to policy advocacy
  • Experience conducting primary and secondary (desk)
    research and writing clear and analytical reports (with proof of published work)
  • Experience in identifying research problems and developing and applying research methods to solve them
  • Experience designing monitoring and evaluation programs and reporting on outcomes and impact
  • Project management and planning
  • An understanding of research funding and evaluation
  • An understanding of and experience in the socio-political and civil society work in Kenya and the region
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili
  • Citizen, permanent resident or existing permit to work in Kenya

  • Ability to travel locally and internationally
