Nation Media Writers - Gender - Jobs in Kenya

The job holder will be responsible for covering news events, writing and submitting accurate, credible, factual and balanced newsworthy stories on gender issues that conform to journalistic ethics, editorial objectives and house style for publication within set deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing, reporting and writing comprehensive News and Feature stories on gender issues;
  • Attending news functions, carrying out interviews, checking facts and making audio/visual recordings as the case may be;
  • Briefing the News Editors/Gender Editor on stories and filing libel and error-free copy within deadlines;
  • Ensuring that the material written reflects a thorough understanding of Nation's Editorial Policy Guidelines and Objectives, house-style and code of ethics for journalists;
  • Researching and providing background information to make stories complete;
  • Responding promptly to news breaks;
  • Generating stories for use on the Group's multimedia platforms and adhering to NMG's Editorial and Social Media Policy.

    Required Skills:
  • University degree in journalism, gender studies, or in any other field, plus a diploma in journalism;
  • 4 to 5 years working experience either as a reporter or a sub editor;
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and cope with tight deadlines;
  • Strong news gathering and feature writing skills and demonstrable knowledge of topical issues;
  • Deep knowledge of gender issues;
  • Strong contacts with organisations engaged in promoting gender equity;
  • Mastery of language and demonstrable organisational skills, forward planning and team work.
