The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes
in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases
and cancer.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological
research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies,
the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of
innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health
policy and practice in Africa and worldwide.
Following the signing of strategic transfer
agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the
Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018.
The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health
issues in Africa and throughout the world.
The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
Job Purpose:
To provide financial support to various aspects in the accounts department, the accounts
officer is generally responsible for disbursing cash payments and maintaining the short term
personnel payroll, in line with organizational SOPs and Policies.
Roles & Responsibilities
Disbursing Petty Cash on approved requests, and balancing the cash daily for all UGX,
USD, GBP and Euro Petty Cash.
Entering Petty Cash transactions into the Accounting Information system (MSD) ensuring
that the transactions are correctly coded in accordance with the unit expense codes and
cost centres.
Disbursing Program and/or Travel Advances to beneficiaries as per the approved
requisitions
Receiving, reviewing and updating staff on travel/program advance accountabilities
submitted.
Entering into the Accounting Information System, staff account abilities for program and/or
travel advances for posting.
Entering into the Accounting Information System, staff account-abilities for program and/or
travel advances for posting.
Advising the Senior Accountant on long outstanding advances for further Action
Preparing Month End Cash count certificates to aide reconciliations
Monthly preparation on the Advance Account reconciliation
Ensure that all NCD short contract staff payments are accurate and account details for
beneficiaries are provided.
Liaise with the NCD project Administrator to ensure proper coding of payment requests
and advise the senior accountant on any re-charges that may arise.
Act as bank agent for the Unit, cashing cheques,
depositing funds and delivering bank
correspondences.
Monthly filing of All Petty Cash and Advance Accountability documents as per the MRC
guidelines
Ensuring that the Unit Safe and all its contents are at all times under lock
Provide supporting documentation for audits
Any other duties that may be assigned
Person Specification
Bachelor’s Degree in business administration or Accounting, Commerce or a related field
Experience working in an accounts/finance environment
Financial reporting Knowledge
Cash and financial management skills
Should have good communication skills
Knowledgeable in use of Microsoft Office packages
Experience in the use of any accounting software
