Job PurposeThe diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases relies heavily on the medical equipment, critical apparatuses and procedures used. Medical physicist's responsibility to design, develop, test and assess medical equipment, critical apparatuses and procedures that will enable diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases using specialist knowledge of physics and other technical disciplines.
The scope of work done by medical physicists includes laser technology, nuclear medicine, physiological monitoring and radiotherapy.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities for Medical Physicist's include:
Administering radiation treatment to patients using machines such as linear accelerators or brachytherapy equipment.
Developing equipment specifications for radiation therapy treatment, nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging.
Developing procedures for the initial and continuing evaluation of radiation therapy treatment, nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging equipment.
Providing evidence of compliance of equipment for radiation therapy treatment, nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging with regulatory and accreditation agency rules and recommendations.
Developing and managing a comprehensive Quality Management Program that monitors, evaluates and optimizes radiation oncology processes.
Performing acceptance testing, evaluation and commissioning of equipment used for radiation therapy treatment, nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging.
Providing radiation oncology physics, radiation dosimetry and safety training to staff members, students and other personnel who will be working with ionizing radiation sources.
Educate patients and other medical professionals about technical procedures, demonstrating the utility of laser, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, ultraviolet and X-ray equipment in detecting changes in the body and interpreting them.
Performing research on new techniques in radiation therapy or other areas of study.
Maintaining, repairing, and replacing equipment used in diagnostic imaging procedures.
Conducting research to improve existing medical imaging technologies
Evaluating medical imaging equipment for safety and effectiveness.
Measuring and characterizing medical radiation from radiopharmaceuticals prior to clinical utilization.
Conducting research on the effects of radiation on human health, animals, plants, or
materials.
Ensuring compliance with statutory standards.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor of Science degree in Physics or Engineering, Medical Physics/Health Physics from a recognized University.
Master of Science Degree in Medical Physicist or Health Physics from a recognized Institution,
Certificate in Supervisory skills course lasting not more than two (2) weeks.
Registration with the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA).
Valid 2022 Practicing License from Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA).
Proficiency in VMAT/IMRT treatment planning
Proficiency in Computer Applications.
