Medical Research Council Laboratory Technologist Jobs in Uganda
The position receives specimens, conducts laboratory experiments and performs IATA
compliant international specimen shipments to collaborating sites for the Combined HIV
Adolescent PrEP and Prevention studies (CHAPS).
To conduct laboratory experiments, make
detailed observations, and analyses data according to SOPs. They also ensure effective
functioning of the laboratory while adhering to SOPs and health and safety guidelines
Responsibilities
Receiving, processing and storing study samples according to SOPs so as to maximise
their quality in subsequent testing.
Performing SOP-guided laboratory experiments in order to produce reliable and precise data for scientific investigations, including PBMC processing; Ex-vivo challenge assay, sterile tissue culture, and isolation of CD4 cells from tissues.
Implementing GCLP practices: Cleaning and disinfecting equipment; Tracking equipment
servicing requirements; Monitoring temperatures and liquid nitrogen levels; Data backup;
Running equipment performance QCs.
Ensuring that required reagents and supplies are in sufficient stocks and are kept securely in recommended conditions.
Performing IATA compliant shipment of samples to and from partner laboratories.
Develops and reviews SOPs, laboratory policies and manuals.
Ensuring health and safety as per SOPs.
Assisting in scientific duties by setting up and cleaning of databases, generating reports regarding experiments; and presentation of findings at local, national and international workshops/conferences.
Assisting in capacity building through demonstrating practical procedures to new staff and attachments.
Developing, evaluating and implementing new techniques with the guidance of laboratory
scientists
Requirements
Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences.
Possession of MSc. in relevant Biological Sciences is an added advantage.
At least a credit in Mathematics, Physics,
Biology and Chemistry.
At least one year of experience working in a research setting.
Hands-on experience and troubleshooting skills in PBMC processing and
cryopreservation.
Experience in shipper preparation and IATA compliant international shipment of
biological specimen; infectious sterile tissue culture techniques are an added advantage.
Ability to work and troubleshoot with minimal supervision.
Should have an uunderstanding of GCLP guidelines for human research
Should have an up to date practicing license.
Should have good communication skills.
Knowledgeable in use of Microsoft Office packages
