Nutrition Project Manager (Leer)

Develop, lead, monitor and evaluate the assigned nutrition projects. This involves effectively managing and reporting on the projects in line with the objectives, time frame and budget with a focus on nutrition system strengthening, training and coordination.

Project Overview

In Leer, Medair operates 7 nutrition sites where GAM breaches the emergency threshold, ensuring provision of all required elements of CMAM.. The goal is to assist in reducing morbidity and mortality in vulnerable communities in Leer.

Key Activity Areas

Nutrition Project Management

  • Manage the assigned nutrition projects in order to meet the project objectives within budget and within the allotted time frame and report promptly any operational concerns to line manager.
  • Provide strong leadership of the nutrition projects, working to ensure short, mid and long-term positive impacts and outcomes for the beneficiaries, local nutrition authorities and local nutrition staff.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of an appropriate and effective nutrition strategy including proactive and a responsible exit planning.
  • Set clear objectives and indicators for nutrition activities in collaboration with the country nutrition advisor, nutrition staff, field managers and, where appropriate, with the local communities.
  • Continuously monitor and supervise nutrition activities, evaluating progress through outputs and impacts and involving the nutrition team in analysis and taking appropriate action as needed.
  • Provide input into the integration of beneficiary participation in all aspects of the project.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of activities according to Medair, donor time frames and formats.
  • Develop new proposals, linked to the assessed needs and gaps and the Medair country strategy, in conjunction with the country nutrition advisor and relevant field managers.

    Staff Management

  • Line-manage the Nutrition Managers of the assigned projects, including day-to-day management, development and training, appraisals, etc.
  • Link with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) Health Project Manager to support the nutrition team while they are working in the same location and facilitate timely nutrition services.
  • Facilitate regular meetings to assist information sharing between project staff, to ensure all staff members are aware of project objectives and to provide the opportunity for feedback.
  • Provide technical supervision to staff in order to develop full responsibility for nutrition activities.
  • Assess the training needs of nutrition staff and ensure that appropriate training is conducted.

    Financial Management

  • Manage the nutrition budget and ensure all expenses are according to budget and meet the Medair standards with regard to financial management, including accountability and good governance.

    Communication & Coordination

  • Develop and maintain regular, transparent and supportive communication structures with the nutrition team, Medair in-country and Headquarters (HQ) health and nutrition managers and advisors and other relevant stakeholders (beneficiaries, community leaders, local and national government officials, UN agencies and other NGOs), with the objective of ensuring good cooperation and partnerships.
  • Participate in nutrition coordination meetings, Medair internal trainings and other working groups or meetings, representing Medair and feeding back to the nutrition staff and managers on relevant issues.

    Logistics

  • Support the logistics activities of nutrition staff, particularly in relation to the purchasing of medicines, supplies and equipment for the assigned nutrition facilities and activities.
  • Ensure items are procured, transported, stored, managed and accounted for correctly.
  • Submit timely requests to nutrition partners (UNICEF, WFP) to release core pipeline nutrition supplies and monitor supply provision.

    Quality Management

  • Promote and use the Medair intranet and other operating procedures, ensuring that all standardised formats are used and guidelines are followed.
  • Ensure nutrition projects are implemented in line with donor proposals and requirements and in accordance with Medair, donor, country and international standards i.e. Sphere and HAP standards.

    Qualifications

  • Higher level qualification, preferably in nutrition or in another relevant field such as nursing / midwifery / doctor / community-based training.

    Languages

  • Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written).

    Experience / Competencies

  • 2 years post-qualification professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Management experience in a nutrition / health context.
  • Ability and willingness to manage project implementation.
  • Good numerical, report writing and administration skills.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, Sphere and HAP Standards and other international humanitarian guidelines and protocols.
  • Able to prioritise clearly, oversee multiple tasks and take the initiative in project decisions.
  • Problem solving ability.
  • Committed to consultative and servant-minded leadership.
  • Team-player with good inter-personal skills.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels.

    Relief experience

  • Professionals with 12 months or more relevant relief or development experience (Experienced Relief Workers).
  • Professionals with less than 12 months relevant relief or development experience (New Relief Workers).

    Working Conditions

    This is a field-based position and working and living conditions may be very different to that previously experienced.

    South Sudan currently is dynamic and the location of the interventions may be in areas of relative insecurity. Tent camping and basic conditions are possible.
