Job Description
Context of the mission
Médecins du Monde (MDM) is an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) involved in humanitarian interventions, operating in Ethiopia since 1986 in different types of health projects from long-term interventions to emergency response.
The fact-finding mission for needs assessment in Afar region along the Addis Ababa (AA) - Djibouti corridor in sex work area was carried out in July 2017.
However, Médecins du Monde – France (MdM – F) could not launched the project in 2018 due to funding delays.
Starting end of implementation of the project started with few outreach activities. Since January 2019, the project fully under implementation with the following objective and result area.
The project aims primarily is to engage FSWs by improving access to integrated health services, psychosocial and legal support, and basic rights.
Essential Duties
The PSS officer will be responsible for the implementation of psychosocial support interventions of the project. Key activity areas will include:
Capacity building of peer educators and health workers:
Quality Psychosocial support provision for FSWs
Monthly reporting and data recording
Participation on material development
Hierarchical & Functional links
The PSS officer will be based in Logia town FGAE clinic, zone 1, Afar region. S/he will be under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator based in Semera.
S/he will also report to the Project Coordinator while having functional links with the FGAE clinic coordinator for technical follow-up.
In addition, and in close collaboration with the outreach worker and PEs, s/he will provide guidance and support for outreach PSS interventions among all the project sites.
Responsibilities
Capacity building interventions:
Train health workers on psychological first aid
Train peer educators on life skills support and managing quality psychosocial group sessions, including the handling of potential acute reactions
Develop and maintain relationships with local government officials
and partners in strengthening PSS interventions.
Participate on material development – e;g manual, IEC/BCC material
[Quality PSS service provision:
Prepare an action plan for PSS service at outreach and health facility level
Follow and implement activities according to plan
Provide FSWs counselling and support groups at both outreach and health facility level.
Support partner and PEs on the identification and handling of GBV cases in line with principles of psychosocial support
Ensure timely referral of GBV cases
Maintains confidentiality during service provision
Reporting and data recording
Maintain record of case by documenting beneficiaries’ situation
Prepare and share activity report with Project Coordinator and as per request when needed.
Develop and summit monthly sitrep
Ensure daily recording of the data in line to the data collection system in place S/He will also be involved in any project related activities as requested by supervisors at the field office or the coordination.
Duty station:
Logia, zone 1, Afar region with frequent travel to other project sites inside zone 1: Dichoto, Semera , Asayta, Dubti and Mile.
Contract duration:
6 months with possibility of extension, start immediately
Job Requirements
Expected profile
Education: Bachelor’s degree in psychology or sociology
At least 2 years professional experience on a similar position with an international NGO
Experienced in training of PSS
Excellent written and spoken English and Amharic, Afar is a plus
Good knowledge of Microsoft office
Understanding and adherence to humanitarian principles
Excellent communication skills with sense of diplomacy
Ability to classify and manage priorities
High autonomous is required
Organisational skills and Rigour
Interest and ability to work in a team
Able to work in difficult living conditions
