Profile Manyonyo Irrigation Company Limited, established by the government of the Republic of Zambia in 2012 to assist smallholder farmers in Chikankata district who are fully engaged in sugarcane cultivation, is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons to fill in the position below:

AGRONOMIST

Job Purpose

Identify and implement the best ways to cultivate and harvest sugarcane, regardless of the climate, and report to the General Manager. .

Key Responsibilities

• Study plants and soil in order to develop better cultivating and harvesting techniques and ultimately improve crop yield.

• Keep detailed records of testing samples and other findings discovered during experimentations. Handle all cane growing, harvesting and haulage operations.

• Maintain irrigation, road and drainage infrastructure.

• Manage agricultural machinery and equipment (whether owned or leased or contracted). Order materials required for the company and control stock levels.

• Prepare and monitor annual and seasonal operational budgets.

• Provide monthly and quarterly reports to the General Manager and the Board of Directors.

• Implement safety and health management systems.

• Aim at obtaining maximum production at minimum cost.

• Initiate newer techniques in soil management processes.

• Deliver lectures to workmates and stakeholders on soil and crop management issues.

Qualifications

and Experience

• A candidate in possession of the following will be deemed most desirable:

• Holder of a Degree or Diploma in Agronomy from a reputable institution.

• For a Degree holder a minimum of 5 years prior work experience, and for a

• Diploma holder a minimum of 7 years prior work experience in the same field.

• A valid driver's license and willingness to travel and reside within the local community.

• Be between 30 to 37 years of age and in good health.

• Possess strong research, decision making, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

• Proficiency with computers, especially MS Office and diagnostic scientific software

• Good technical, organizational and interpersonal skills with a high level of integrity.

• Experience in dealing with smallholder farmers will be an added advantage.

• Must be Zambian.
