Komaza Kenya ESG Senior Manager Jobs in Kenya
Combining high-scale operations with digital intelligence, Komaza is revolutionizing African forestry - unlocking the potential for small-scale farmers to serve booming wood markets.
We’re planting commercial-grade forests at a rate of over 1.5 million trees per year, expanding our farmer base by 5,000+ – and we’re growing fast. To date, we’ve planted over 8 million trees with 25,000 farmers, making us Kenya’s largest industrial tree planter.
We hold the only sustainable blueprint for meeting Africa’s $30B wood supply crisis. Smallholder farms offer nearly limitless land and can develop a hectare of trees at a far lower cost than big plantations.
We have been recognized with numerous awards and investments, including The Climate Policy Initiative, The Nature Conservancy, Forbes, and Novastar Ventures.
About the roleWhile our unique business model enables us to harness the enormous commercial potential of timber and carbon to fight climate change and increase the resilience of rural farming communities, it also exposes us to a wide range of environmental and social risks.
Through our forestry operations we work with vulnerable communities across highly degraded landscapes, and through our commercial operations we work with complex logistics, industrial machinery and chemicals.
It is, therefore vital that we develop robust Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices that can scale with our business as it grows and enable us to achieve our mission by:
Assessing, mitigating and managing the complex ESG risks we are exposed to;
Monitoring the impacts of the project on farmers, communities and the environment to guide senior leadership decision-making; and
Improving access to the capital we need by meeting and exceeding global best E&S practices.
The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Senior Manager will report to the Director of Corporate Finance & Strategy and work closely with the Global Chief Operating Officer, and team leads across the business.
They will provide regular reporting to the Senior Leadership Team, Board of Directors and Investors. The ESG Senior Manager will oversee the ESG Specialist, and there will be opportunities to recruit additional team members and engage consultants to plug skills and capacity gaps, as required.
While the ESG Senior Manager will be responsible for oversight of business as usual ESG practices, it is expected that the ESG Specialist and relevant team leads will be able to work on these with a high level of autonomy.
Instead, the ESG Senior Manager is expected to focus on (1) systems design and implementation, (2) ESG strategy and direction, (3) investor relations and stakeholder management and (4) achieving
and maintaining sustainability certifications (FSC, Verra CCB, etc.).
The role is based in Nairobi, Kenya, with occasional travel to Coastal and our Central Kenya offices.
What you will do
Environmental and Social Management System (“ESMS”) - development, implementation and oversight of a comprehensive, effective and cost-efficient ESMS to ensure compliance with IFC Performance Standards, national legislation, agreed investor requirements and other best practice guidance as Komaza scales.
Impact monitoring and evaluation - development, implementation and oversight of a monitoring and evaluation program that meets the requirements of FSC, carbon, investor and other key stakeholders.

Environmental and Social Action Plan (“ESAP”) - responsible for delivering on ESG initiatives agreed upon with investors through the ESAP, including achieving FSC certification, completing an E&S baseline study (with support from consultants) and others.
What you have
Either 5+ years working in ESG or similar fields (carbon, impact and M&E, etc.) with strong experience of IFC Performance Standards, or a more experienced hire with complementary skills and a demonstrated interest in the area.
