Background


The Kenya Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (KIWASH) Project is a five-year USAID funded
project focusing on the development and management of sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene(WASH) services.

KIWASH works with nine county governments to expand WASH services through a combination of technical assistance and strategic infrastructure support.

Summary of Primary Duties

  • The Communications Intern will provide direct communications support for KIWASH activities in
    Western Kenya to ensure our activities are properly promoted and communicated.
  • The ideal candidate will help KIWASH highlight the details of our work through long form writing and photography for various social media platforms and USAID related communications products.

    Essential Duties

  • The Communications Intern will work with the Communications Specialist to provide external and internal communications support for KIWASH.

    Responsibilities will include and are not limited to the following:

  • Solicit information for success stories from technical team members and sub implementing
    partners.
  • Draft and/or edit success stories with appropriate photographs for sharing with USAID.
  • Proactively collect and organize content for the KIWASH website and social media in coordination
    with technical teams.
  • Provide necessary writing/editing support of project related reports.
  • Contribute to the project photo library by telling stories through photography
  • Support the technical team to prepare presentations, site visit kits and press kits.
  • Review the daily press for WASH related topics and news, and share with team based on relevance
  • Help establish and maintain a database of project partners by soliciting input from the KIWASH
    team and key partners, stakeholder meetings and forums.
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

    Qualifications

  • A degree in the field of
    communications, marketing, international relations or a related area is desirable.
  • 3-6 months experience in the field of communications.
  • Knowledge of MS Office software, web design, HTML and other media software packages (i.e.
    InDesign, Photoshop, video editing software)
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of social media content sourcing.
  • Good photography skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to learn and work with the team

    Base of Operations

  • Kisumu, Kenya with frequent travel to the five counties in Western Kenya

    Reporting

  • The Communications Intern will report to the Communications Specialist.
