Summary of the Research Mentors PositionsSince inception, KIPPRA has created a network of experienced scholars and researchers, both locally and globally, who from time to time support the Institute in delivering on its mandate. In addition, there are several experienced officers in public and private sector who are graduates of the KIPPRA Young Professionals (YP) programme and are actively contributing to the policy making process. KIPPRA seeks to enhance its human capacity through mentorship programme. The main purpose of the mentorship programme is to:
Deepen knowledge, skills, interests, and competences of policy analysts.
Offer a path to career advancement by developing confidence and interpersonal skills.
Act as a role model to the Young Professionals
Foster long term career development
Gain appreciation of management and leadership skills
Widen access to professional and social networks at national, regional, and international spheres.
In pursuit of KIPPRA’s objective to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, skills, experience and techniques with leading scholars, researchers and international centres of excellence, the Institute is seeking to recruit Two (2) Research Mentors.
One of these mentors will be an expert in any of the social sciences while the other will be a gender expert. Research Mentors are experienced and trusted advisors who offer guidance, training, and expert support to one or more policy analysts.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the mentors will be to;
Support in preparing at least one co-authored policy research paper.
Give at least two technical presentations at KIPPRA.
Collaborate with KIPPRA staff in preparing proposals for funding.
Participate in training staff in advanced public policy analysis methods, effective writing, and presentation skills, and communicating policy advice
Support in designing and conducting capacity building programmes to policy makers and other public policy stakeholders in collaboration with Institute staff.
Providing mentorship to policy analysts in the assigned department
Providing peer review for KIPPRA’s research outputs
Participating in enhancing the Institute’s networks and partnerships
Sharing expertise and experiences
Guiding in finding solutions to development problems
Acting as a sounding board and providing alternative perspectives
Contributing to the Institute policy engagement activities as appropriate to their research areas
Introducing the mentees to people and networks to assist them in career growth.
Participate in induction and training of other research staff and
students as requested.
Submit a report on accomplishments to the Executive Director on the completion of their term at KIPPRA.
Undertake other strategic work that may be specified by the Executive Director from time to time
Qualifications
To be recruited as a research mentor, the individual should meet the following minimum requirements:
Holder of doctorate degree in social sciences and related disciplines
A minimum of 10 years’ experience in policy research gained from public service and/or university teaching
Demonstrated experience and knowledge in mentoring junior researchers.
A thorough understanding of relevant research approaches and paradigms
Ability to develop a line of inquiry as an independent researcher.
Potential to develop a research plan as well as proposals for funded research
The ability to contribute to capacity building of junior and middle level researchers in the Institute
Attributes
Sound knowledge and experience in the application of advanced research methodologies
Confident in networking and engaging with key institutions and relevant stakeholders.
Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
Problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
Positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills
The ability to lead and work as a member of a team.
Ability to demonstrate values of punctuality, dependability, and reliability.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Initiate active engagements with the research staff as a mentor on a regular basis
Keep a diary or recording of your encounters with staff
Apply your experience to get at as many of the staff as possible to be actively involved in the mentoring process
Provide guidance to researchers in the department that will facilitate them to accomplish their research projects and even publish in referred journals
Strengthen networking of the department with new linkages
