Job Summary
The job holder will be responsible for:
The support and administration of all the commission’s databases, which include Oracle databases, Structured Query Language (SQL) Server, My SQL databases
Providing third line support to all database based production applications within the organisation.
Operational Responsibilities:
Ensure regular backups are undertaken and regular testing of critical system software, application software, data files and documentation to ensure reliability.
Ensure that the disaster recovery site is managed and tested regularly and license and compliance is adhered to.
Maintain the performance of all databases by calculating optimum values for database parameters; implementing new releases and patches; completing maintenance requirements; evaluating computer operating systems and hardware requirements.
Create query definitions that allow specific data to be easily extracted for fast analysis or use.
Provide monthly database reports for easy auditing of the databases.
Propose specifications and flowcharts for new database installation, recommending optimum access techniques; coordinating installation requirements and also maintain updated database documentation.
Recommend solutions by defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, database security and data back-up for easy recovery specifications.
Install revised or new systems by proposing specifications and flowcharts; recommending optimum access techniques and coordinating installation requirements.
Prepare users by conducting training; providing information and resolving problems to facilitate them in their operations.
Support database functions by designing and coding utilities in line with the department’s standards.
Provide assistance to the webmaster in Maintain the commission’s website and ensuring it is updated with relevant features and information.
Qualifications Knowledge and Skills
Academic qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Software engineering or an equivalent from a recognised institution
Professional qualification
Advance knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Relational Database Management Systems such as MSQL (Structured Query Language), Postgre SQL, Firebird, Oracle and Apache Derby or any other experience in data integration from various data sources which includes Microsoft excel
Level of knowledge applied to the job
Knowledge in Java, Web designing frameworks, server side scripting and coding

Ability to work under pressure
Ability to lead and manage teams
Problem solving skills
Relevant Work Experience
5 years of service in a comparable position from a reputable organization
