IntroductionThe Kenya Cancer Association (KENCANSA) is a voluntary run non-profit making organization
established in Kenya in 1995 after recognition that Cancer was emerging as a leading cause
of deaths in the country. It was officially registered as a non-profit making organization in 2005. KENCANSA’s core mandate is to raise public awareness on cancer as well as mobilize
stakeholders, including the Government, to prioritize cancer in their planning, programming and budgeting. The organization’s other mandates include coordinating and providing leadership to efforts aimed at cancer control and reducing the burden of cancer in Kenya, and participating actively in activities and initiatives geared towards reduction of the cancer burden in Kenya
Responsibilities
Overall Leadership
Serve as the Chief Executive Officer of KENCANSA
Act as the official spokesperson and inspiring public representative of KENCANSA
Lead KENCANSA in successful implementation of the organization’s approved strategic
plan.
Develop and update organizational policies in consultation with the governing board
Work with the governing board to ensure integrity in implementation of KENCANSA
organizational policies, procedure and processes, as well as continuous resource
mobilization.
Engage, inspire, empower and equip KENCANSA Secretariat staff, volunteers and interns
to develop and carry out a wide range of cancer prevention and control campaigns /
activities.
Offer guidance on all KENCANSA external relationships including advocacy, policy and
external communications.
Support to the Governing Board
Serve as the Secretary and ex-officio member of the Board.
Enable and facilitate board operations by working with the Board Chair to plan and
convene regular and special Board meetings;
Working closely with the Board to recruit, train and orient new board members, and
maintain a strong, balanced Board.
Provide the Board with frequent updates on programming, finances, resource
mobilization and governance issues.
Enable and facilitate the working of board committees, as needed.
Provide administrative support to the board, including coordinating travel arrangements for board members and maintaining board records such as signed/approved Board
minutes.
Human Resources Planning and Management
Develop and maintain a positive, healthy, safe and legally compliant work environment
for all KENCANSA secretariat staff, volunteers and interns.
Oversee the implementation of KENCANSA’s human resources policies, procedures and
practices, including staff performance management, coaching, evaluation and
performance appraisals.
Recruit staff with the right background and skillset to help further KENCANSA’s mission.
Ensure appropriate orientation and training for new staff members, advise and mentor
staff to improve performance.
Oversee the hiring, training, and management of interns, researchers and volunteers in KENCANSA.
Resource Mobilization and Fundraising
Provide overall leadership and direction to the governing board and resource mobilization
staff in projecting KENCANSA’s resource needs, while defining strategies for raising the
required resources.
To achieve the above, the ED will provide leadership to:
Cost the organization’s strategic plan and develop a resource mobilization strategy
aligned to the strategic plan.
Develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive annual fundraising plan.
Develop and sustain a diverse funding base with an emphasis on public, private, local
and international donors.
Grow KENCANSA membership base and develop an individual donor base.
Research, secure and manage funds from a variety of sources, and ensure appropriate
reporting to donors/grantors.
Maintain complete records of fundraising efforts and donors to maximize results.
Financial Planning, Management and Control
Work with Secretariat staff, Finance Officer and the Finance Committee of the Board to prepare comprehensive annual budgets.
Administer KENCANSA funds in accordance with the approved budgets.
Oversee the monitoring of KENCANSA’s cash flow and provide the Board with monthly
reports on the revenues and expenditures.
Ensure that sound book-keeping and accounting procedures are followed, and that
KENCANSA complies with tax obligations and all other relevant statutory requirements.
Ensure annual audits are conducted in compliance with the statutory requirements.
Operational and Program Planning and Management
Serve as the primary decision-maker on core operating activities including human
resources, procurement and budgeting and financial management.
Manage KENCANSA secretariat staff in the successful execution of their duties, including, cancer programming, resource mobilization, communications, administration and finance.
External Relations and Partnerships, including Advocacy
Establish good working relationships and collaboration with NGOs, funders, policymakers,
partners and other stakeholders to help achieve the goals of KENCANSA.
Develop vibrant communication channels with stakeholders to keep them informed of
KENCANSA’s work.
Lead the identification of trends, changes or new developments and needs in the
communities and stakeholders served by KENCANSA.
Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of creative and effective advocacy
campaigns and projects.
Ensure that KENCASA advocacy campaigns and projects contribute to the fulfillment of its
vision and mission, and reflect the priorities and core values of the organization.
Risk Management
Identify and evaluate risks to KENCANSA’s human resources, property, finances, goodwill,
image and reputation.
Develop a risk management plan for KENCANSA.
Implement measures to control and manage risks
Qualifications
Post Graduate degree in a Public Health or Social Sciences related discipline.
At least 10 years’ working experience; with at least 5 years’ experience in a senior
management position within a public health organization / civil society organization.
Those with experience in a cancer control and/or non-communicable diseases (NCD’s)
setting will have an added advantage.
Qualification /skills /experience in the project management cycle.
Demonstration of previous resource mobilization experience from diverse sources.
Proven experience or potential in designing and implementing public health promotion
and advocacy programs.
Proven experience in leading and managing successful Institutional capacity
strengthening initiatives, as well as change management in a public health /civil society
organization setting.
Possession of strong communication and report writing skills.
Proven experience of brand building and/or promotions, as well as public relations in a
public health environment
