Introduction

KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) is one of the leading research centres in Africa. The Programme engages in a wide range of research on the main causes of ill health in Africa. In addition, KWTRP has a strong commitment towards developing local research leadership. Most of the capacity building activities at KWTRP are managed through the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL) with funding from the Wellcome Trust and DFID. The aim of IDeAL is to strengthen research capacity in Africa through research training schemes ranging from attachments for school leavers and undergraduates, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, PhD studentships and postdoctoral fellowships.

Job Purpose:

To provide statistical support for ongoing studies in the Epidemiology and Demography Department.

Reports to:

  • Study Principal Investigator
  • Statistics team lead

    Responsibilities:

  • Developing study analysis plans.
  • Providing advice on randomization and frequently observing randomization.
  • Liaising with trial and data managers and programmers about data quality and missing data, verifying data accuracy and validity.
  • Scheduling and preparing reports of analyses for independent Data Monitoring Committees, Steering Committees, and publications.
  • Actively interrogating data for discrepancies, errors, and missing data, in order to verify the accuracy and validity of the data.
  • Reporting and liaising with trial investigators, data managers and programmers on the quality of the data, and resolving any errors according to the study protocol.
  • Discussing and interpreting results with colleagues and collaborators in a trial/study.
  • Ensuring deadlines and project milestones relating to data and analyses are met, coordinating with other members of staff and external collaborators as necessary
  • Supporting the production of summary tables and graphics for interim and final analyses.
  • Preparing and depositing research data and documentation for curation and archiving
  • Conducting routine data checks and queries resolution and reports generation.

    Qualifications:

  • A Degree in mathematics or statistics.
  • 3 years experience in similar position with demonstrated research experience, preferably in the health sciences
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with one or more statistical packages (including Stata, R or SAS) plus knowledge of any SQL-compliant DBMS (e.g. MS-Access, MS-SQL, MySQL Postgres,); exposure to GIS analysis
  • Proficiency with statistical and data management procedures (data cleaning, manipulation, summarization, tables, listings, graphics, and inferential statistical output), and report generation.

    KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Post-Doctoral Statistician Jobs in Kenya

    Job Purpose:

    We are now seeking to appoint a postdoctoral statistician who will provide statistical training and support for IDeAL and non-IDeAL students and fellows based at KWRTP.

    Responsibilities

  • Provide statistical support for Programme students and early postdoctoral fellows at all stages of research projects – from proposal writing to data analysis and publication
  • Work together with other statisticians at KWRTP to develop and manage statistical training packages for students and staff.
  • Propose new approaches of analysing existing datasets within the Programme.
  • Work with data management teams to ensure proper archiving of data arising from students’ research work.
  • Support Director, IDeAL in developing linkages with statistics departments in local universities and other initiatives that are focusing on developing statistics capacity in the region.

    Qualifications:

  • Doctoral research degree, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, or other relevant subject.
  • Proven record of quantitative research and analytical skills along with advanced research experience in data analysis
    and/or statistical methods.
  • Experience of and demonstrated success in modeling using at least one of the following programming languages: Stata, Python, R.
  • Experience in teaching or supervising statistics students is an added advantage

    KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Officer Jobs in Kenya

    Job Purpose:

    To oversee the planning and execution of the research activities for a study that aims to identify health system factors enhancing or constraining the integration of breastfeeding Peer supporters into inpatient setting in public hospitals in Kilifi County, Kenya. The post holder will be involved in managing and co-ordinating research study activities in two sub-county hospitals.

    Responsibilities

  • To contribute to the on-going development and implementation of the SIBs study protocol and workplan
  • To take primary responsibility for research data collection, including supporting the development of methods and draft data collection tools, planning for field work, collecting data and ensuring that all interactions with study participants are managed in ways that positively support ethical conduct and the collection of high quality data.
  • To contribute substantively to analysis of data from the study, and take primary responsibility for analysis in designated areas.
  • To support dissemination of study findings, including through the preparation of drafts of reports and manuscripts for publication; making presentations at scientific meetings; and supporting feedback to study participants.
  • To actively contribute to developing their own capacity in social science, health systems research and related research methods, particularly for qualitative research. This includes engaging with a wide literature on health policy/systems and social science methods, active participation in trainings provided and focused efforts to continuously seek and act on feedback on performance.
    Where indicated, provide training and support to other research team members / collaborating partners in areas within these responsibilities.
  • To attend departmental and programme scientific meetings including regular meetings of the Centre Scientific Coordinating Committee meetings, and social science group meetings
    Other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

    Qualifications

  • A master’s degree with at least 1 year work experience in health research; or equivalent experience in social science, health system or public health, nutrition or equivalent.
  • A degree in public health, or nursing (or a Registered Nurse), or nutrition and dietetics with at least 3 years work experience in health research.
  • Experience in facilitating participatory workshops and meetings
  • Good interviewing and observation skills
  • Strong research experience with collecting, managing and analysing qualitative data
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft applications and qualitative analysis tools such as NVIVO
  • Experience working in public hospitals settings in Kenya.
