Job Purpose:The purpose of this post is to develop and support HIV/STI (i.e. HIV- Sexually Transmitted Infections) research in KWTRP.
This would include a multicentre phase I/II HIV-vaccine trial and a Gonococcal vaccine trial among key populations in Mtwapa in 2020, and the Tatu Pamoja study among key populations involving sites in Mtwapa, Malindi, Nairobi and Kisumu.
The post holder will be responsible for providing leadership and coordination across the range of observational and intervention HIV-STI studies that are run in KWTRP, and also given an opportunity to develop their own research interest.
Key Responsibilities
Contributing to overall scientific strategy and cohesion of projects among the HIV/STI group.
Planning the overall budget and setting targets for development of the HIV/STI platform on a yearly basis, and negotiating and agreeing the plans with sponsors and principal investigators, and clinical research department.
Negotiating with prospective funders and PIs regarding proposed trials, their budgets and conduct.
Line managing section heads (i.e. clinic, data, communities, and laboratory).
Reviewing progress of clinical trials against internally set and contractual milestones.
Communicating with trial sponsors to ensure compliance to applicable regulations, and applying corrective and preventive action.
Providing input on clinical trials aspects of developing proposals and funding applications.
Responsibility to ensure that investigator-led research studies are run to a high standard and delivered on schedule.
Qualifications
Masters degree in a non-clinical specialty (e.g. public health, epidemiology, or a related field relevant to HIV/STI research).
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B;Ch.B.)
Medical qualification with registration to practice as a doctor in Kenya.
Experience in research, preferably with HIV affected and key populations.
Leadership experience in clinical trials, clinical research or clinical practice.
Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications.
Experience of line management and delivery of projects with multiple external partners.
Desirable
Familiarity with biomedical sample collection and handling.
Regulatory experience.
Experience in social science.
Experience in
laboratory science.
Competencies
Evidence of supervisory ability and an ability to coordinate multiple tasks.
Strong skills in budgeting, development and oversight of project proposals, leadership of meetings, and writing skills.
Ability to work across cultures and evidence of communications skills in that context.
Willingness to learn communication skills relevant for key populations.
Willingness to respond within tight timelines and to cope with changing assignments.
Excellent diagnostic, analytical and investigative skills
Strong planning, administrative and organisation ability
Confidentiality, integrity, patience and calm disposition.
