KEMRI Air pollution Laboratory Technician and Analyst - Jobs in Kenya
•The post holder will integral to the ACE air pollution measurement and analysis Hub. The technical role will include processing of gravimetric filters (weighing and standardization) used for sampling air pollution controlled with the latest Automated Gravimetric Filter Weighing System Robot.
•The Robot is installed in a state-of-the-art processing facility with controlled atmospheric conditions. The filters are used to measure fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from air pollution at the highest level of precision, a pollutant highly detrimental to health.
•The technical role will also include the careful management (including calibration, preparation and audit) of equipment used for measuring air pollution in the field that will be housed at the ACE including Ultrasonic Particle Air Samplers (UPAS) – for measuring PM2.5 (with the gravimetric filters), LASCAR CO Monitors, GEOCENE Stove Use Monitors (SUMS) and other related equipment.
•The analytic role will include data manipulation, cleaning and preparation of air pollution samples and
some statistical analysis.
•The role will include quality assurance of data collected in the field and
processed at the ACE. The technician will also provide training to students and fieldworkers in
collection of air pollution data.
•The post holder will ideally have some knowledge or direct experience of working in the field of Air Pollution (at the household level and/or ambient air pollution).
•He/she should be diligent, competent, and precise in handling samples to generate high quality data and should be able to demonstrate technical expertise relevant to the post. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining all air pollution equipment (e.g. UPAS, Lascars) at the Hub facility and for supporting the research conducted by the CLEAN-Air(Africa) Unit to associate air pollution sampling to health. The post holder will report to the CLEAN-Air(Africa) Director for KEMRI.
Core responsibilities• Operate the Automated Gravimetric Filter Weighing System Robot which allow simultaneous weighing of
50-75 filters per running cycle (including filters labelling, placement, and disposal).
• Assist in the installation and operationalization of air monitoring instruments, including calibration
• Participate in the establishment,
operationalization and maintenance of standard operating procedures
for the weighing of filters
• Performs checks, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs on air pollution equipment and stove
temperature sensors (SUMs) as required.
• Ensure quality assurance of air pollution data collected in the field
• Support the labelling and stocking of air pollution equipment
• Performing check of data recorded by the air quality instruments deployed in the field to ensure
completeness, validity, and compliance with study protocols.
• Being able to carry out simple data analyses of air pollution data to support scientific investigations
• Provide training in HAP monitoring and gravimetric filter management and measurements, including
ability to travel to partner countries to deliver training
• Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by the ACE Director
Education, skills and competencies• BSc. in Chemical Analysis, Engineering, Medical Laboratory Science and Technology or a related field (A professional certificate in Air Quality Management will be an added advantage)
• Scientifically minded personality, with strong analytical skills
• Ability to measure and perform air quality tests, analyze data and troubleshoot problems
• Ability to follow routine schedule and with keen attention to detail
• Ability to work under minimal supervision
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
• Excellent problem-solving skills and innovative under changing dynamic field
• Excellent organizational skills
